Medium Res Productions

Postby bullis1 » Tue Nov 20, 2007 6:48 pm

Does anyone know of some medres demos/slideshows/etc on ST? I am already aware of plenty of diskmags that use this screen mode, but I'd like to see some good 4-colour artwork and effects. A quick look on pouet didn't turn up anything really new to me, but there's so much out there.

Thanks for your replies.

Bod/STAX coded Atari Legend a medium-rez intro for (I think) one of the text adventures we released recently. But, off the top of my head, medium rez demos are very rare.
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

Yes, quite rare. That's why I'm asking the experts here.

Note that I am not only curious about demo screens/effects, but slide shows and art packs as well. Any cool medres pictures would be nice too. There's a nice one on the Antic Cybergraphics site of a stone face, but the site's currently down so I can't show it here.

The only medium resolution title that comes to mind is Megaroids,
I'm sure i've had a few others? I will have a look!
There was a early Lucasfilm game (mentioned on here) that ran in Medium.

Some High Resolution games but no demos only the Digit Tracker.

Along the lines of medres games there's also Bratacus by Psygnosis, but I'm not really looking for games. Thanks for your info!

The scrolltext in the main menu of my Demounstures demo is in medium res.

Ra's highresmode intro also uses med-res. (fyi: it's sort of a photochrome using med res instead of low res and interlace + scroller)

This one: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=12237 ?

Too bad it's STE only, but it's damn nice anyway. I always wondered why people didn't use "Spectrum 512" type effects in medres to boost the colours.

Demounstures unfortunately wasn't that nice. It really didn't make good use of medres or mono.

I think POV4 menu picture was in med rez and I used med rez on some border scroll code. Never did a med rez demo though.
Mac Sys Data/Persistence Of Vision

Instructions said to install Windows 2000 or better so I installed Fedora.

Thanks again for the info! I'll check POV4 too.

Maybe it's time a med res demo was made? You can do alot with 4 colours if you're a good pixeller. Especially if the image just uses different shades of one colour, or similar colours. The only problem is that pixelling becomes somewhat tedious when dealing with those extra lines of resolution!

Attached is my revamped Quartet screen I did some years back which looks a sight better than the original one :)

That does look better, but did you make a patch so you could actually use it with quartet?

Quartet's display was just a simple PI2 file. So if Unseen uploads the PI2 file(s), you just replace your installed version with his. Job done.

Just copy it into the program directory and rename it to PIC.COL I think it is.
Attached is the original Degas PI2 version for use with Quartet:-

Cool, but I don't use quartet unfortunately (I'm more of a tracker guy). I just thought it looked way nicer. I hope someone else uses it though.

You beat me to it LOL. I think it was just the graphics for the Digital sample editor and Voices voice set editor that had them called .COL and .MON . I have revamped versions of them as well I think but not on my PC.

Not every file that was 32066 (or 32034) bytes in length were Degas files .. but a fair amount of them were :)

I found a few medres (and many other spectrum 512 and 16 colour) pictures on the following site:
http://dahstra.rksmithfamily.net/spectrum/
The "640x400" gallery is where the medres pics can be found, including the famous "Stone Face."

Enjoy!

Our last demo "Another Kid Story" has an effect in medium resolution : "The Distorted Scroller Rendered With Dots"(c) tobé. It only works on STe but you can watch it under Hatari (but sometime the screen jumps).
