I see that not all instruments look mapped as GM/GS so I have some difficulties to listen them in a plain MIDI player. I should check them somewhere else (Cubase/Garageband...)

I can't recognise those songs, though. Well, Axel_F, I do it for you, jailhouse, johnny, i know that even with the wrong drums, hehe

What instrument setting these require? At least with standard midi instrument settings they songs sounded pretty weird...

OK, I loaded Johnny into garageband and this is what I found

there are 4 separate drum tracks (you know, bass, snare, cymbal, ...)
instruments were all different according to the GM table, so I set
track7 electric guitar
track6 is the lead vocal
track 4 and 5 upright piano
track3 another guitar
track2 fingered bass

This way it seems to work.

By the way, the notation is quite good.

I noticed some of the midis are dated 1990 so those pre-dates the GM standard, i guess they are made for a specific synth or to be played on more than one synth at the same time.

Stefan, you are probably right.
When I wrote my tunes I just plain ignored the GM/GS standard since my synths weren't all compliant (surely my DX7II-E! wasn't, hehe) and I used whatever channel and sound bank wanted, just being sure to properly naming the track in Cubase, just in case I messed the settings.

but that was part of the fun. then the Sound Canvas kicked in...
