Old Tracker wants his tracks again!

Postby zakk02001 » Sun May 03, 2015 10:53 am

Hi All.

I am need of massive assistance in tracking down old mods from public domain libraries.

Many years ago when i was a mere teenager, I wrote a lot of songs using STB Noisetracker. The group was called State of Mind and my alias was Zakk. We had a song selected for an asteroids spin off called Shockwave which was PD somewhere. Much to my chagrin, of all the songs we sent to be selected, he had to pick the one that required the least disk space which was the only one that the other member wrote although it was clearly the wrist of the bunch!

Unfortunately all the discs and taped recordings i had have got damp damaged and unplayable. I know that one disk at least was listed on the Seven Disk public domain library.

Really though, is there any such thing as a massive file/disc with all known mod files and I'll take it from there hunting it down within this?

Hi Steve,

It's been a while my friend! There is a chance that the disk of mods you sent me is still at my parents house. I'm going there next weekend so I'll have a quick dig in the loft and see what I can find. I have no idea if the 25 year old disks will work but there may be someone on this forum who can help! I might even have some of your old letters in a pile of correspondence marked 'demo crews' :D

Robert

Wow!!

Thank you for all of your replies, and many, many thanks for all of the hard work that people have gone to on my behalf. especially RobertAnnett and his 'group' who physically hunted down one of the two discs that I believe were around. It is the first one and not brilliant, but hey!

If anyone does stumble across the other disc, then if you could let me know I would be eternally grateful yet again! On reflection, I'm not too sure I ever did release the second disc which had titles like 'Hammer of the Sun' and 'Anvil of Ice 'and I know for fact that my third disc with representations of Lord of the Rings characters never made it to PD and is lost forever. If only back in those days there was a way of recording these properly other than the headphone socket from the TV to a cassette!

But again, many thanks to all of you who have searched for this disk. I am still writing music for my own pleasure to this day (Prog Rock) on more modern sequencers and it's amusing for my kids and friends to see the humble beginnings of this hobby. The quality and writing is a lot better now I'm in my 30's though!!

If there is one small thing, and this was probably ambiguous in my OP, I was not Ferox (Steve Spurgeon), I was Zakk (Jason Frost).

Many, many thanks again to all of you!!

Many apologies for not replying sooner by the way, we have been threatened with closure at work and I have spent many, many long hours researching and writing documentation as to why we should not shut. It has taken all of my time and my kids haven't seen much of me either!

Lotek_Style - Thanks for your work in adding us to the DB.

Exxos - If the other disk is around, the file names would have something incorporating 'Hammer of the Sun' and 'Anvil of Ice'. Many thanks if you get a chance to look for these or if you could send me a copy of your DVD with the mods on then I'll look for them so you're not wasting your time on something that may or may not even exist?

HuggyOne - Yes that's the game! Thanks for that too as I've hunted for years trying to find it on the many sites that are scattered around with old PRGs.

RobertAnnett - You're great, and thanks to you too for managing to find the disk and taking the trouble to rescue the data on it after an initial fail! You've put a nostalgic smile to my face and my kids howling with laughter!!

EDIT: - I've just realised that Robert Annett is the person that the other member of State of Mind, Steve Spurgeon, was corresponding with to start off this whole affair! What are the chances?

Zakk: hmm ok... so Ferox is another guy... im confused now... because the name is mentioned in a couple of mods in there.... can you both (you and Robert) please confirm who did exactly which mods? I guess your mods are now mixed up under ZAKK which is not correct then?

Yes, I am Zakk, Jason Frost and the other guy is Ferox, Steve Spurgeon who was initially in contact with Robert Annett who wrote Shockwave. I never had any contact personally with Robert Annett until now which completes the circle in a manner of speaking!

Of the mods that have been found, I (Zakk) did: - Armageddon (Remix), Armageddon - The Epic, Someone to Love me, Zakk's Theme, Wonderful Tonight, Roxette (Never be the Same).

The rest were by Ferox (Steve Spurgeon) except Armageddon V1.1 which was both of us.

However, on the other disc which may or may not still be floating around, I believe that I did all of them.

Is this any clearer?

There does also seem to be another tracker under the name of Zakk which is not helping.

Yeah well... the world is "big" :) ... and another guy called Zakk is not much... For example we have over 10 MAD MAX'es in the database :)

Alright... that was a bit of fiddling... but I divided your entries:

Zakk:
http://demozoo.org/sceners/58944/

Ferox:
http://demozoo.org/sceners/60138/

Ok... now there are three Insignia TRISOUND chiptunes in the package that Robert sent... are these tunes done by you or by Ferox?

Thanks for that. Doing a lot of thanking just lately!

We never did any chiptunes - to my knowledge we both only used trackers - so I would have to assume that they are not ours. However, I have not got these files to listen to them to make sure that any of them sound familiar.

I have no idea as to who may have done these, it may have been Steve Spurgeon and actually the more I think about it it may have been - it was a long time ago!!

Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Ok... atleast we got confirmation that they are not done by you :) ... There is a FEROX.TVS in there... which makes me believe he did those three tunes.

A reasonable assumption, and I can confirm that I have never produced a chiptune ever as I didn't like the sound of them - cue gasps of astonishment! On this basis, they must be by Ferox.

Victory is definitely his, and the others sound very familiar too, so I'm guessing that they probably were his. The bass riff on all of them are nearly identical which would leave me to believe that they are done by Ferox.

Hope this helps!

Now I need to find all of the other mods ... somehow!!

Zakk,

You're welcome! This was actually quite fun and I also found some other 'rare' items that I'll be preserving now. Having to pack a couple of disks into a Jiffy bag and post them was quite nostalgic!

Sorry to hear about your problems at work but hopefully finding some of your old mods is the start of a run of luck.

Do you remember anyone else you might have sent disks to? Does the name Rich Davey ring a bell? I think Steve originally contacted me via him. I'll drop him a note and ask if he has any of your mods.

Robert

Thanks again Robert,

I was never really in contact with anyone as Steve was the Head of State of Mind being the elder of the two of us. Are you still in the programming game?

The only person I ever got in touch with was the owner/manager/whatever-he-was of Seven Disk PD Library where we swapped mod discs. I'm convinced that I have another disc out there but I may be mistaken. If anyone has that complete library, that would be a place for me to start.

Exxos - is there any way that I could have a copy of the mods that you have either via download or sending me the DVD with them on? I can search from there as I realise that time is precious.

So State of Mind was only two guys? Can you supply a crewhistory?

Is this OK?

State of Mind were a small Module crew founded in 1991 and made up of Ferox and Zakk. Both members were in High School having just turned teenagers in what would now be about Year 9.

Ferox was a year older and thus the Leader of SoM, and managed to gain a contact in Robert Annett who was looking for music for his game 'Shockwave'. State of Mind's only claim to fame was to have a piece of music written by Ferox as the title sequence and also in-game music again written by Ferox.

Ferox now has little to do with music owning his own company called Heatsink Bikes. Zakk is still writing to this day but purely for his own pleasure and willing (and sometimes not-so-willing) audience members. These are in the heavy-prog-rock style, ie 20+ minute songs, where the use of sampled and sequenced drums, bass and keyboards are still used.

Zakk is still looking for old Mods which were in the Seven Disk PD library. Some titles were: - Hammer of the Sun, Anvil of Ice. There was another with either Church or God in the title, but this was over 20 years ago and my memory fails me.

Interesting stuff. I'd never heard of Shockwave but it looks like it was co-authored by Richard Davey. Is that the same Rich Davey who created LGD? http://www.atari.st

I was able to find a link to this page :

http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/10s_Spot/pd/10music.htm

"S154 FROST MODS Seven MOD files of music by Jason Frost. The titles are The Anvil of Ice, Armageddon - The Epic, God Knows, Hammer of the Sun, No-one to Love Me and Zakk's Theme."

No downloads though :(

Yep. And the same Richard Davey who is responsible for Photon Storm and Phaser (if you fancy something a little bit more modern):
