A small curiosity of 520ST music :)

Postby yerzmyey » Thu Oct 20, 2011 9:00 pm

Hi.

Last times I was testing how Atari 520ST would behave as a synthesizer in recording studio.

What I mean is - in early 70s synthesizers sounded in similar way to later sound-chips, they had rather simple possibilities - it was recording-studio effects what gave the special sound to early electronic music actually, not entirely the synthesizers by themselves, in fact.

So - I recorded all the required sequencies (with MusicMon) track by track, I added loads of studio effects and... ;)

Here is is:

http://yerzmyey.i-demo.pl/Yerzmyey-Enor ... nitude.mp3

The only instrument/sound-source and sequencer is Atari 520ST.

Of course ***HEAVY POST-PRODUCTION*** has been added, to change sound of original sequences totally. Recording studio effects used: track-by-track recording / filters / phasers / choruses / flangers / delays / echoes / reverbs / equalizers / compressors / limiters.

It shows what Atari micromusic hardware can be used to. :)

If anybody's interested, here are original sequences - the only WAVs the song has been made of :)

http://www.sendspace.com/file/rgzhbh

Well, just a curiosity. :)

Enjoy.

Y

Listening to it now .. great background music whilst I'm catching up on emails :)

Seconded, I like.

I can play music like this while I'm doing something else, like soldering on my STacy, and it
drives my wife crazy (so keep up the good work!)... :)

kool notion!

It's something i've pondered having played around on a JUNO6 3 wave shapes? Filter and chorus!

yM always had a punchy sound! Thats when I did the led storm mix.

The 'electronic images' track I did features 8bit drum sounds from a tracker, stspeech and jp8000 24bit? Sounds on the akai? An orchestra of bittage! Lol

Must try out minimoo!

Other thoughts might be nice to try.

ym samples on an Akai sampler? Midi controlled

Ym samples in E.P.S.S
ym samples in Hextracker!
ym samples in ACE

Scribble synth is good for this task too!

Cheers

Thx guyz. :)

Well, YM samples in ACE - that's what I was thinking about too, several years ago. ACE or other in multichannel trackers of Falcon.

To use samples from all Ataris (including the vintage game consoles maybe?) and some loops, also from XL/XE - and mix everything on Falcon, adding also some professional Falcon's sounds. :)
Might be cool but I don't have the consoles actually. Except 2 Lynxes.

A bit off topic and maybe a stupid question, but since people mentioned sampling the YM to use in other proggies I thought I had to ask.
Isn't it possible to create (if it doesn't exist already) a tracker that combines the YM with multi channel DMA sound on STE/TT/Falcon?

Yo,

as far as I know, maxYMizer uses 3ch of YM and 2ch of DMA - on STe.

However I don't think so there would be anything like that (but with more digital channels) on Falcon.

Ayreon - You asked my question... I've been thinking about this for a long time and I am surprised with your responses (Cyprain & Yermzey). I thought there is already at least a few music demos with psg + dma... No? Holy crap. That's sad :(
When I hear YM sounds from games like simulcra/starglider I am super excited. Electricity-like or noisy* sounds are rather hard to get from DMA or sound uglier. At least when you compare with Ami-sounds they are superb/more natural.

Yermzey, after SV11 you are going to create something like that - I am telling you this :P

Again, Yerz, great Music!

* Yeah, i know Atari doesnt make a noise. It's not a noise. Although you may hear a small whispering, compared to water flow sounds of the mountain stream :P

there is a 3 digi 3 ym tracker I believe but its not released?

There are chip tricks you can do in Mod trackers.

The Predator intro music is YM + Digi

Hahaha, yes - the silent whispering. ;)
Thx anyway. ;)

Native: to be more precise - Ayreon was askin' about "a tracker that combines the YM with multi channel DMA sound".
If one takes it as a demo-scene standard nomenclature, then the "multichannel" word should go to about more than 4ch of digi sound. Well, or at least 4, in case of YM+DMA. That's how I understood it.

So now -
maxYMizer uses 3 YM channels + 2 DMA digi channels (if I'm not mistaken)
and
MusicMon uses 3 YM channels (but 2 of them can actually play digi sound instead of synthetic).

Also there are engines playing:
4-8-16 digi channels on ST and YM (Hex-Tracker)
4-8-16 digi channels on STe and DMA (Octalyser - 8, Hex - 16 as far as I know).
8-16 digi channels on Falcon (FlexTrax - 8, Octalyser - 8, DHS Tracker - about 10 due to CPU, HEX should go with 16 on Falcon too. Didn't try it 'though. Yet).

Hmmm. Kinda messy info. :) Sorry.

Last times we were wondering if DHS Tracker (Digital Home Studio) can use CT63 (and similar) to get more channels.
Sqward wrote that DHS even didn't started on 060. :(

OK, so there is no way to get it / find it in anything like faiding-twilight or other resources... I tried... Maybe i gave up too early... hmm..
And any search criteria on pouet.net yields no results.
If any of you know some demo / screen / intro using DMA + YM whatever please let me know.

BTW: this predator intro is (C) 1987 - i guess it simply cannot be DMA + YM.

No guess. If it is really from 1987, DMA sound is impossible. The STE was still in the development labs back then.

It's DIGI and YM, Drum and bass sounds are samples and the lead instrument is believed to be YM!!

If you check the YMrockerz site I recall seeing the tracks using DMA sound listed on the menus.

Amazing stuff, sounds like Jarre's work from early 70's.

Could it be possible even in theory to add such filters for ST emulator output?

While it might be impossible for single instruments how about selectable filters/effects for all three channels seperately?

Thx guys.

Well, adding filters/phasers/delays to emulation theoretically should be possible. But I was thinking once about making kind of 'hardware modification' to add those to every single channel of YM/AY. Of course it ended up with 'idea state' only. ;)
But it should be possible. ;)

Best wishes,

Re: The tune - I listened to it all the way through first time.

It draws heavily on the styles of Jarre / Stephane Picq / Tangerine Dream / Philip Glass. (Hopefully, you will consider that to be a compliment!)
