The Atari Music Network is Live!

Postby atarimusic[dot]net » Sat Jan 02, 2010 2:19 am

From sequencing Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk concerts in the 80's to tearing up the dance floors at the 2010 Blip Festival, Atari's reputation as a music monster machine has persisted for a quarter of a century. For MIDI synth enthusiasts, the Atari was and still is the ultimate bridge between man, music, and machine. For chip musicians, the Atari's untapped sonic palette has yet to paint the ever-expanding canvas of 8-bit music. But the Atari was more than just a great computer - it defined an entire era that included synthesists and chiptuners from the Amiga, Commodore, ZX Spectrum, NES, PC, and MAC communities. AMN welcomes and celebrates all vintage digital musicians no matter what their computer - as long as it's slightly yellowed, of course!

The Atari Music Network (AMN) aims to:

• Provide free webspace for all vintage computer musicians to create professional pages they can upload their music and videos to.
• Stimulate social interaction between vintage computer musicians and developers through AMN's Forum
• Encourage ex-developers to update and redistribute commercial software or release it into the public domain.

Specific to Atarians

• Advocate and sponsor Atari based musicians in the MIDI & 8-bit music scene.
• Catalog and review all known Atari music software and hardware.
• Collect and offer hard to find Atari warez (abandoneware only).
• Collect and offer sysex sound banks and software utilities for MIDI synths.

Cool looking site with lots of nice articles. ST really deserves to have this kind of music site, keep up the excellent work :)
I always remember my Amiga friends slagging ST's music capabilities in the early 90's. One day I got the Lily on the Beach by Tangerine Dream, they listened to couple of songs and never raised the subject again ;)

I signed up yesterday and I think the site looks very promising. However like any good site it needs constant quality input from experienced users and also others eager to learn etc. Anyway I wish it every success!

Nice site if I do say so myself  Worth mentioning to as many Atari musicians that you know as possible, as this could be the best place bar none, once the number of users is there.

Thank you very much for your kind words of support Shredder. It's been extremely laborious building this site but getting that kind of feedback fuels me to keep going. You can also help spread the word by joining and posting your chiptune music there too. There are social network sharing buttons included on every profile, album, and song page so you can promote yourself on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, or just about anywhere you like. As I continue building my Facebook Network, I'm realizing that there are 100,000s of chiptune enthusiasts and just as many vintage MIDI synth gurus out there. Just imagine the potential growth of the AMN community in one year's time! :-)

Cheers! Go Atari!

Today, when trying to get to AMN's website I only see a white page with the message Index of /. Is AMN down, or my company's bloody proxy not allowing me to visit it?

Hmm, very suspicious. I have noticed also that the Twitter account doesn't exist anymore 8O Also Mal7921 has told me that the Facebook account is not there anymore. Looks like AMN has been closed :( I hope Donovan Logan is allright and we'll see AMN online again soon.

David Etheridge has posted on the Sound On Sound forums:
Hi folks,
it's all a bit confusing at the moment, as AMN appears to have disappeared from the face of the planet.
I'm trying to find out what's happened, and as soon as I get any more info, I'll let you know.

Well, hacking the website, the Twitter account and the Facebook account, all at the same time... must be an obsessed hacker :)

I had a website about motorbikes, many many years ago, and everyday I had to restore the backup, and everyday the hackers came back. They won the game as I gave up :( Apparently was a security hole in the early PHP-Nuke.

You mean someone shut him down?
 CIA or KGB or MI5 covert operations all move in at the same time to shut down someone's presence on the internet.
unlikely.
About the hacking on the website... it's an automated attack. No use to restore unless you patch the security hole.

Well, us Atarians are a subversive lot, flying under the radar, always popping up when least expected. And lets face it, the secret services around the world need the practice

But onto more serious notes, as mentioned above, it looks like as of May 27th (Here in the UK at least) the Atari Music Network vanished. At the same time the website went, the twitter and facebook accounts also look to have been closed, the registered email address no longer works and the PayPal account for donations has also closed.

Since I noticed the site was down, I've been trying to contact Donovan but without success. I'm not going to second guess any reasons for the closure, nor do I bear any grudge for it. I'm sure there are reasons but it's not up to me or anyone else to speculate on this.

What I will say though is thank you Donovan, you created a site that tried to centralise information and bring people together, and succeeded. It's just a shame that it has gone so soon.

If you happen to read this Donovan, do get in touch.

Yup I know speculation is bad but I was a little worried to see the stuff he was putting on Ebay. Maybe he is simply slimming his setup to using his most important stuff, but then again maybe something else... 8O

Indeed, but without a definitive answer, we will never know.

Regardless of the reasons though, you have to admit, he did a damned fine job with it all, just a shame it's gone.

I agree, I think anyone would be hard pressed to match the quality of the site he produced. Oh well, for the time being we are back to using this forum and also the Sound On Sound Atari Forum which are obviously excellent too.
