Postby NGF » Fri May 15, 2009 9:10 am

Like the topic says, is there any tool for these actions?

You do not really want to use YM format these days. It does not save all details of the tune because it only samples the registers of the YM every VBL. The format completely looses everything that happens to the music inbetween, e.q. Timer effects and digi.
SNDH is already the most bative format you can get. If you want to use the music somewhere else, I'd suggest capturing the output from a real ATARI and doing an MP3 (or even better OGG Vorbis) file from it.

hehe guys... well I think I know the reason why he wants .MID ... there is a .YM to MID converter therefore he also requested the .YM format :) I guess he wants to do remixes of chiptunes :)

Actually I wanted them as .mid because:
1. Learn how to play the songs on piano
2. Use them on my Doom2 maps :D

I'll dig out the tools .. think I've still got copies of Oedipius' tools for YM to MID etc.
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

Some (old) YM tools - one of them, when run on my XP machine, comes up with an error stating that it "needs Windows 95 or higher" :)

Quite a few of these tools have got their 'C' source code with them in case anyone fancies doing some updates?

No problem .. used most of those in the past. No idea where Oedipius disappeared to as his YM tools were very good. Used to use the MIDI conversions on my very first website (donkey's years ago now) but glad I kept all the tools safe.

Thought they'd be better on Marcer's Tracking BBS? Or is that going to stick with Atari-only products (where's Marcer when you need him?) :)

Could you share it with me? I'd love to play the LED storm theme, Sly Spy and Exolon (well, I already figured most of that one out by ear since it's quite slow) on my piano :)

BTW if you make a nice arrangement, why not stick it up on Youtube?

Hey guys, was wondering if some people can run the ym2mid application under XP or 7/Vista?
I've tried to launch it under 7 (with compatibility setup etc) but no luck, does it run only under Win95/98 or is there a way to make it work under a more recent OS? thx in advance if you guys know a way to fix this, this tool would be really useful to me for doing some remixes ^^

Unfortunately I don't think any of those tools have been updated in a while and/or have their source code with them. However there is a really old ('96) PSG to MID convertor on Aminet which comes with the full 'C' source code if you're able to code in 'C'? You'll probably need to unpack the .YM files first as they're LHA compressed but the raw data should be compatible-ish :)

Hi, is there any other tool than Saint for converting .SND to .YM?
I tried it and the .YM quality is a bit crap (jerky sound, non synchronized, bad HW envelopes). A command line tool would be better.

Question about Saint YM conversion.. they seem not to be lha packed..

However, when i pass them thru YMtools, I'm not getting any size improvement .. Am i missing something ..

In addition is there a "native" tool to convert Music 'binaries into .YM (there used to be a link on leonard's page to a swiss guy's page but it seems to be down now.

hey guys , im a big midi enthuesit what is ym like ?
i program , is it just raw data?
like the wave and sound command

or does it use the xbios32 to replay?

found cool program in stos that allows music to be played out sound chip or midi port ,, so if raw data file this thing can play it out midi port

very un accurate for patch settings but good recreation for timing and data

Dunno about ymtools, but you can pack them with lha directly. Something like that should work:

LHA a -h0 OUT.YM SONG.YM

Maybe you have to fiddle with the file names (dunno if the output file has to have the LHA file extension or not, it's been a long time since I last did that), the important part is the -h0 option to write a header type 0 as far as I remember.

Been messing about with OpenMPT (Windows .MOD tracker) and remembered I had some old .YM to .MID conversions. So I imported the raw .MID files into OpenMPT and saved off the Impulse Tracker format files.

Odd that 3 channels of YM end up being 12+ channels in Impulse Tracker but I'm sure they'll be useful to anyone who might want to do some remixes :)

Two tunes I'd done years ago in .MID are: There Are Many Sheep in Outer Mongolia and the Level-16 Fullscreen.

Listening to the fullscreen track now, really nice job! Love the bell/glockenspiel subject and and synth sample for the chords. More!

[edit]
Oh, remembered that it's midi and depends on the Apple Quicktime wavetable... still, nice job :D

Yep, MIDI instruments aren't the best but it's a method for remixers to get a jump ahead I guess. Replace the instruments in the song with proper samples and start to beef up the tune ... well, that's how it works using my own tone deaf theory!
