YM recommendation

Postby coze » Mon Dec 08, 2008 5:15 pm

Hello,

I'm new to Atari and looking for cool Yms to listen to. I downloaded the SNDH archive, but I would like to know what tunes Atari fans consider the best.

Also, what is a good Ym player for Atari ? (on real hardware) On windows I tried Jam which is great.

and what is the most commonly used tracker program ?

thanks

I really like music by gwEm, Stu, and 505.
Really, anything by anyone in the YM Rockerz group is good.

I just saw Stu play at Blip Festival 2008. In my opinion, he was the best out of the whole festival.
I saw gwEm play at Blip Festival 2007, and he was amazing as well.

I know gwEm wrote an SNDH-player/DJ-program called STj, and he wrote a tracker called MaxYMiser.

thanks a bunch ! I tried the trackers, seems triplex4k and musicmon is my thing. I also tried protracker for amiga days' sake but it was rather a disappointment ...

here comes my question. I thought Atari sound chip (YM ?) was a chip based chip (meaning, no samples, chip music) but I hear some sampled music at some demos (some amiga mods), and musicmon has has some support for adding sample instruments into the songs I believe. How does that work ? Does it put strain on the 68k ?

Sample on the YM are played by changing the volume registers. As this is done by the CPU (usually on interrupts basis) at the replay frequency playing a sample does strain the 68k a lot.
