STE shifter revisions

Postby tobe » Thu Dec 02, 2004 9:46 pm

Hello,

I wrote an advanced effect for STE. A real torture for the shifter :)
I wrote it on my 520 STE, with a motherboard made in 1989 (socketed chips).
It works under Steem, with some minor differences due to shifter timings emulation.

But when I run it on my 1040 STE, but with a motherboard made in 1991 (soldered chips), the screen is black !

So, it seems the shifter (or another chip ?) was upgraded and works in a different manner :(

Can someone tell me more about the differences ?

(Also, i noticied a hole in the new motherboard, where there is a socketed chip in the old one, what chip is missing ?)

Desesperatly,
Tobe :)

The shifer I assume you mean the blitter ? it was intergrated in latter STE's leaving a gap where the blitter used to be. Sorry I can't help with your exact problem, I assumed everything would work the same. you sure your stuff is working right ?

Yes, i'm sure.
At least it works fine on first STE models and Steem (a miracle ;)).

So the hole in the motherboard was the blitter location in the old models ?

But the real question is about the shifter revision. I know the STE shifter was poorly documented, but maybe someone know something ? (somewhere ?)

there are a hec of a lot of revisions, I think there was 2 holes on latter ST's, can't remember offhand but maybe the FPU hole ?

in anycase, the blitter intergrated into the surfance mount IC, thus leaving a extra hole.

If you send your file over I can try it on my ST's, ive got a lot of um at the moment, all kinds of revisions, would be interesting to see.

No, sorry ;)
Thanks for the details about the holes.

About the shifter, i'm going to check the timings. It's possible to detect the revision by the TOS version, 1.06 for the old one, 1.62 for the new one.
