MegaSTE has the option (or is it default? can't remember) to run @ 16Mhz (ie. twice the speed) but very few (if any) games will use the extra speed.

I did remember seeing source code to a demo which checked for the MegaSTE and switched on the accelerator in the depacking routine and then switched it off afterwards ....

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at:

I'd think the MegaSte is running at 16 mhz until you switch back to eight mhz...

it will runs games etc better as it has the blitter chip and lots of hardware fixes ...
a few things to add are tos2.06 or mega tos versions
later than 1.6x and another internal drive {look for old applemac machines {power mac or before} these have 1gb scsi 8bit drives in them and these days get sold at garage sales or more often end up in dumper skips
esp things like big offices {printers is a common source} and schools
that are moving to x86 pc land

{be warned look inside your new mega make sure the blitter chip is fitted some production runs had the socket and no chip or just a blank pcb where the socket should be
{you can clear the holes and put a socket in finaly plug in a chip}

i found an address for old computers ic's if this is handy to anyway

{actualy i was given it by a local guy who contacted me to get an
oric 1 fixed which ive got nearly done {chips ordered}}

the prices are realy good for 6502 z80 etc era machines

but im sure he has atari stuff also or will have a pal he knows
best to contact him first by mail via his sales email address onsite ... m#Chipshop

and if anyone has stocks of chips surplus im sure you can deal with him over stuff

No one has mentioned a few key features of the MegaSTE so here goes:

VME bus:

More advanced than the Mega bus with more expansion cards created.

SIMM slots:

Ability to use simms to upgrade to 4MB like STE

Internal HD:

Optional internal harddrive

High density floppy:

Later versions had a 1.44MB floppy drive

The MegaSTE is the the STE what MegaST is to the ST (sort of...)
