Pre-announcing the Lightning ST - USB & IDE for STs

Postby czietz » Thu Aug 08, 2019 3:59 pm

The Thunder & Storm & Lightning team is pleased to announce that the Lightning ST will be available very soon!

The Lightning ST is an addon board for Atari ST/STm/STf/STfm/MegaST and it offers...

1. USB interface compatible to the Lightning VME:
- Drivers for TOS, MagiC, MiNT.
- Supported devices: USB mice, keyboards, storage (like USB flash drives), printer.

2. IDE interface with the same features as the Thunder IDE:
- Falcon-compatible interface usable with all hard-disk drivers
- Smartswap feature allows fast access to PC-compatible (i.e. byte-swapped) media for easy data exchange

3. TOS decoder for TOS 2 or EmuTOS 256k:
- Note: ROMs are not included on the board, needs external TOS ROM board (or flying wiring)

The Lightning ST is designed to fit on all the different board layouts -- though on those with the CPU under the keyboard it is a very tight fit. It can be installed in two ways: 1. If the CPU is already socketed, it is almost plug-and-play: Put the Lightning ST in the CPU socket, put the CPU into the Lightning ST. Only a few wires need to be soldered. 2. If the CPU is not socketed: Solder a DIL socket on top of the CPU (no need to desolder the CPU!) and put the Lightning ST in that socket. Solder a few extra wires.

The boards are in production right now. We will announce the release date as well as the release price shortly!

Excellent project!
Can't adapt to the STe series ?, the Mega STe has Lightning but no IDE, and the STe should not be left behind the f and fm.

This is very cool! Seems like a nice clean way to get these features into any ST. Bravo!

How will the automatic start of the IDE device from the TOS be set? TOS chips could be patched but: all STf / fm have those chips mounted in sockets or some are welded on the motherboard?

TOS chips are generally in sockets, but if you're unsure please check your ST's mainboard.

Note that a TOS upgrade (to TOS 2.06 / EmuTOS 256k) or a TOS patch is only needed to boot from IDE. All other functions of the Lightning ST can be used with TOS 1.0x, too.

Just curious - will this board work with accelerators like the AdSpeed ST?

Thanks.

Well, if it works with Pak it should work with accelerators in general I think. But AdSpeed is different as it uses the IDE hardware I/O space to control it's functions, I'm really not sure how that works out as I have never seen an ST with both IDE and AdSpeed.

The details are in the adspeed manual, available at dev-dosc (as usual).

Nice work Czietz! I certainly want one... :)

I assume the USB connector follows PC-standard? One or two USB ports?

Why did you choose a 40 pin IDE socket and a separate power connector over a 44-pin IDE socket?

Two ports. Pinout is standard, but a bracket will be included anyway.

Because, from experience with the Thunder, 40-pin is what most people prefer.

Have tried, IDE is not possible with an ADSpeed installed.

Would it work on an STe with this device?:

It would -- assuming the mapping of PLCC pins to DIL pins is correct with this adapter. However, be aware that such an adapter adds a lot of height. The whole "tower" will likely not fit in a 520/1040STe case.

So why don't you do two versions? One for the ST/f/fm models and one for the STe, each with its appropriate socket on the motherboard.
I think that the proportion of STe computers is 50 times greater than that of TT, it is a development that can be widely disseminated by the Atari community.

I have emailed these people as I had the same idea.

I am looking to do it in a Mega STE... so height is not a big issue.. BUT I also would not mind an accellerator, and alt memory.. So .. not sure this one is in my future.

Its not working in Mega STE, for Mega STE we have the Lightning VME, and there are also IDE Solutions for MegaSTE

I would also look into using this (or other) for MegaSTE

OK.. I do not know of any other IDE solutions for the MegaSTE.. I wanted MonSTer.. not being produced.. The VME options are not there..

The MegaSTE is supposed to be able to use IDE without having to go through the CPU.. its already there.. but outside of SCSI or ASCI options.. I see nothing for the MegaSTE

NOw... just thought of something.. there was a project long time ago that Ppera put up.. for a cartridge rom..

I have also seen this.. https://backofficeshow.com/shop/atari-hobby-diag-cart

What about putting the Lightning VME drivers onto a CART... booting from the cart.. which loads the USB drivers for the storage.. then piggy backs on your regular AUTO Folder? or Softboots into the AutoFolder on the USB?? IS this idea anything doable??

Mega STE has internal ASCI, so you can use the UltraSatan either externally or internally. I don't see the requirement for IDE when there is such a solution available.
Falcon ct60e 060 - 256mb ram - phantom bus and dsp accel // Atari TT - Thunder and Storm IDE 64mb ram - Lightning VME - USB LAN - Ati Mach64 2mb // Atari STM 4160 - 4MB ram - 16Mhz exxos 1.5 booster - Ultrasatan
