Discovery Cartridge mystery addon device

Postby catmando » Sun Nov 18, 2018 6:40 pm

Recently bought another Discovery Cartridge but this one came with a mystery accessory box that appears to connect to the floppy drive ports.

Wonder if anyone has seen this before and can offer up what functionality it adds?

There was project in an early ST user mag which had a track counter to let you see where the ST was trying to access. Could it be a version of that?

Could it be a plugin trackdisplay? I've contemplated doing that at one point or another.

Here's some pictures of the internals, looks like it was professionally made as the soldering looks too good to be homebrew, also the case is not hand made either.

I'm guessing the small socket on the back is for external power??

DATEL track counter. Check out page 80.

I remember the article too, it might have been in New Atari user or Atari user.

Good spot, looks like mystery solved then, so it's a Datel Trackmaster then :D

Heh, impressed someone actually remembers an ad from a paper 28 years ago... lol

I got inspired and dug through some of my files and found 2 different track display builds. it's kinda cool to watch it working...

oh, and before I forget, if someone wants them just pm me.

Wasn't there a third party drive with a built-in track display?

I had an external drive with track display from "Golden Image", which was distributed by DATEL so it might be the exact same drive.
It stopped working some 10 years ago or so and thus is no longer with me. Was a nice toy and worked fine for 15+ years.

I had a quick look but couldn't find it...maybe it was an issue of STF...

I did see the datel advert whilst looking though
