Atari 1040 STf Monitor alternatives?

Postby mightydimo » Wed Jun 20, 2018 4:45 pm

Hi All, first post here. I recently purchased the above. As i understand this is a model that does not contain a modulator so only official monitors will work? Can someone shed some light on this issue. Ideally i want to install something like a indivison mod or similar. Does anything like this exist or is in the works? Or is this model of ST very limited in use outside of official monitors? Any help appreciated.

You can use any television or old CRT monitor with RGB / SCART connection for low and medium resolution.
You can use almost any VGA monitor for high resolution.

You can some VGA monitors with all resolutions. Use google or the search function of the forum.

Any TV or TV frequency monitor that has analogue RGB inputs (such as SCART supporting RGB) should be able to display the Atari low and medium resolution modes.

If you have a VGA monitor that can display TV frequency signals (horizontal frequency of 15625Hz and vertical frequency of 50Hz) then it may be able to display the Atari low and medium resolution modes. If the only input is the 15 pin VGA style D connector, you will have to make or find a suitable cable.

Some, but not all VGA monitors (CRT and LCD) can display the Atari high resolution mode. Results vary between different monitors, and the same monitor, but different Atari STFM/STE machines! You may well have to play with the monitors settings to get a full, and clear image. As the video output from the Atari does not completely match the VGA standards. Again, you will have to make or find a suitable cable or adapter.

Thanks all for quick and informative replies. I actually have a new Benq monitor that does 15khz to arrive very soon. What i need to clarify is would it work for my specific model (ie no modulator) MCSWITCH (ATARI Monochrome & Color to VGA ADAPTOR. Or ATARI Monochrome to VGA ADAPTOR with Audio output. Assuming i connect it to my Benq... It will also be in Full colour but upto just Medium resolution. Do many games use high resolution?

Low resolution = 320x200 - 16 colors (four bitplanes)
Medium resolution = 640x200 - 4 colors (two bitplanes)
High resolution = 640x400 - 2 colors (one bitplane)

Almost all games only use Low resolution.

All you need is Olivier's MCSWITCH Wongck linked. It will do mono and color if your monitor can support 15khz. Modulator is only needed for composite and RF and won't affect VGA adapters.

Solution already mentioned above... twice.... get the adapter from http://www.gossuin.be/index.php/shop
As Gaiyan mentioned, it's the MCSWITCH.
It have a jack for your speaker, and has volume control too.
As expected, does all rez if your LCD can handle it ( like yours).

Olivier also is responsive and post out the package fast, I got mine in less than a week (may be was 5 days) after payment (within EU).

The RGB and Monochrome video outputs are available on all Atari ST/STFM/STE machines.
Machines that have a modulator, can also output composite video and a UHF TV signal. VGA is an RGB system.

So yes, it would work with your machine.

Thanks all very much. Im not gonna bid on that colour Atari Monitor. Seems the issues with monitors is like the Amiga (ie 15khz). Im just very happy that my model can do RGB.
