Found some eprom's in an ST lot

Postby KLund1 » Fri Jun 08, 2018 3:51 am

I found several eproms in a Atari ST lot a got a while ago.
I recently got a erpom burner I'm learning to use. I just learned to read eproms. But I have no idea how to read hex. I saved the BIN's and thought I'd post them here for some of you experts can see what they are. The eproms are D2716's from '77. My burner dose not have setting for D2716, but dose for M2716's. So close enough?

I think they are from a standalone "intelligent" terminal, so not from Atari hardware. Also, they are corrupted, e.g. I think "Prafter pgrt" should read "Printer port" and "Trafscrapt" should read "Transcript", i.e. bit 3 is sometimes missing.

Unlikely. Owing to the 16 bit data bus of the cartridge, its ROMs should be split into high and low bytes which the ones posted by KLund1 aren't. Also, this doesn't look like 68000 machine code.

Yeah, definitely would need two 8bit roms for any ST cartridge.

They were IN an Atari ST? In like how and where?

No they were loose on an old antistaic pad along with some other known ST IC's. I'm think they probably were corrupted. The window is open on all of them.
Well Now I have some eproms to use to learn out to burn images into.
Can I use M2716 setting to burn TOS images into these D2716's? I am assuming they are 16K each. 16*6=96. Which TOS will fit, if any? Oh, these are 24 pin.

2716s are 16 kbit each, so 2 kByte. No, TOS won't fit into 6*2 = 12 kByte. Also, if you want to use them for something else, you of course have to erase them first. Do you have an EPROM eraser?

I believe D2716 and M2716 are the same. I think that D2716 is Intel and M2716 is ST. So just different brands of the same thing. Regardless you can burn the eproms with M2716 setting. Although, like czietz said, there are no Atari ST applications for those chips.

What you want for burning TOS are 6x 27C256 chips. That's 32KB x 6 = 192KB which is exactly what the TOS images up to 1.04 are.

Different brands of the same type of EPROM often had their own proprietary high speed programming algorithms, and if they had, they were the algorithms used for programming specifically those chips. Therefore the specific algorithm for programming one brand of EPROM type 'X' will not always work for another brand of EPROM type 'X'.

However, no matter what the brand, they normally have a fallback 'slow' programming algorithm which is the same for all EPROMS of type 'X, and for those, EPROM programmers often have a 'Generic' brand category where, if you choose brand 'Generic', type 2716, you can program any 2716 using those settings, it just won't be as fast as using the specific algorithm for the brand / type might be.

Another thing to beware of is devices with different programming voltages, such as 2732 and 2732A

In general, all of these complications only apply when you are programming a device. In read mode, any 2716 or 2732, 2764 etc, can be read as if it is any brand.
