Multi-colored bars on startup

Postby fletch15 » Sun Dec 17, 2017 11:23 pm

Hi. I am new to the forum and recently acquired an Atari ST. When I turn it on I get multi-colored vertical bars (see picture) which won't go away. Anyone any ideas what the problem may be? Thanks for any help.

I had an ST with a similar fault and that turned out to be a bad shifter chip. The shifter is the chip inside the 'metal box' on the motherboard, if yours is socketed, check it's secure, could be an easy fix :)

Is there any disk drive activity when you power on?

There is no internal drive as it is an early 520ST

You don't have any floppy drives connected? It would be interesting to know if the ST continues to boot despite the screen image.

I agree with Spiny, I have heard of this fault before being the shifter chip. Re-seating the chip can sometimes solve it (if, as already mentioned, it is socketed). If it's an early 520ST then I'm guessing there's no composite output (to a TV) that you can also test with?

use a small safety pin bent to lightly scratch thru any oxidized pins and terminals on the shifter and shilter socket
I feel whatever lead chrome tim aluminum they comprised the ic socket from probally has built a tid bit of resistance over the years
