1040 STFM no floppy icons / Desktop appears immediately

Postby Chandler » Tue Oct 03, 2017 7:56 pm

I have a 1040 STFM with a problem i haven't seen before

When i switch it on the desktop appears almost immediately, no delay from TOS or floppy drive noises

When the desktop appears there are no floppy icons

So far i've swapped the drive for a known working drive, changed the grey ribbon cable, change the floppy IC, changed the DMA and changed the Yamaha chip

Still the same

Has anyone else seen this before or have any idea what it could be? :)

Get schematics, and check DriveSelect0 and SideSelect coming from the PSG.
Your drive is jumpered for Drive0?
You use TOS 1.0x?

Then I suggest to measure the DS0 line. There is just an inductor between PSG's DS0 out and the ribbon cable. I have seen defective inductors, but not in signal lines. A multimeter should be fast enough for this purpose.
Have you checked the swapped parts in another ST that they run correctly?

I guess you have checked the obvious - does the floppy get 5V? And does it get *enough*?
