Falcon Clock Patch

Postby exxos » Mon Oct 31, 2016 12:50 pm

I documented how the F04 is "hard wired" into machines some time ago.. http://www.exxoshost.co.uk/atari/last/falcpatch/index.htm

Though today I put together a better PCB version. I've included some buffer resistors as I saw bad ringing on the clocks.

There must be a lot of Falcons out there which haven't had this patch done. I'm going to build up a couple of these PCB's for my own machines. Though if there is interest, I will put together a small batch for my store.

I sent you a RTC board to test on the falcon.. This is the clock patch (nothing to do with RTC).

Exxos,

I'd be interested. I have a Falcon that has a clock patch in it...but it looks like its been butchered. I personally think its the cause a lot of instability in my Falcon. Are you willing to take on some repair work?

Yes... I hear yah. Folks over here in the US don't have much choice when it comes to Falcon repairs. Let's chat via PM. If I send my machine over there, there's a couple of things I'd like to you do.

What is the best way to see if this is needed?

Granted I also wish someone would make a bunch of these.

Sorry, I know that is more for RTC, than Clock patch. I would be happy to order whatever you make for the falcon though.

I will do a PCB order later and get probably 15 made up, then that should cover easily the people who want one.

Finally built and tested with GB6. Machine is stable no issues from what I can tell.

I don't know of any tests for crackling noises and such, but as far as the clocks go, my board cleans them up as much as possible.

All info is on this page.

They are just going into the cooker right now in fact...

I hope to get them tested later today, then should be in my store very soon. I'm trying to complete all these little projects before xmas as seem to have a backlog of them.

Chris (or anyone with this board),

have you tried this on your CT60e'd Falcon? According to the "DoIt Falcon" guide, using the 74F04 method is a big no-no for accelerated Falcons (and it's recommended to use the 74F08 method).

Additionally, Czuba explicitly 'forbids' removal of the resistors: https://mikrosk.github.io/ct60tos/CT60/ ... ting63.htm (at the bottom).

Btw Chris, if/when you'll be reading this, take a look here: http://www.stcarchiv.de/stc1998/06/falcon-beschleunigen ... it's one of the most comprehensive clock patch problem analysis I've seen so far (yes, translating it from German adds more fun to it. ;-))

my CT60/ CT60e runs perfect with my mod. It solves the noise on the clocks and buffers them. The MEGA ST had exactly the same problem and solved exactly the same way. I really don't care what other people say, or what other sites say. We need to move forward with current research not get lost in half baked ideas and information from 10-20+years ago.

I did all the research myself and produced a mod which solves the noise. As to if it will solve every problem under the sun, I doubt it. Though the clock patch can't be blamed for every problem under the sun either.
