My new, compact Atari -> VGA adapter.

Posted this on Facebook:

Hey guys. Got back in the Atari community some months ago and I needed a vga-adapater. Started with the "normal" one. I really hated soldering the DIN13 connector. So did some thinking and came up with the following design. Plugs in to the Atari, audio and composite are avail from the RCAs and there is a jumper to route audio to both RCAs.

Still a little bulky, working on MK3.

(Oh, and all pins are broken out on the 14-pin header, two GNDs).

I will release the Eagle files. However I'd probably wait for MK3 instead of this one (MK2.5); it was made in a hurry when MK2 was badly designed so there are things that can be done smarter..

Edit:

One of these.
Plugs straight in to the Atari.
Measures 44.2x31.4mm.
It's for use with 15KHz monitors.
Jumper to set the yellow RCA as composite or audio out (so one doesn't have to use a splitter to plug it into an amplifier).
RCA's are mainly for STs since (as you can see in the picture) STEs already have them.
3xtrim pots for fine tuning of RGB.

Picture (without 4P2T switch, my soldering iron decided to stop working mid-soldering).

So, it is multisync and you can swap from colour to monochrome mode, right? It looks great because it plugs directly on the monitor connector.

Nice! Probably the best design I've seen for this. The cable from Best is great, but the cable seems too long.

Very nice project! For sure better to wire those awful din's direct to the PCB.

Thanks for your kind words.

For those who are wondering, the full cost of the device is roughly €5.5, including PCB. Most components can be found on eBay/AliExpress. I found the btor1 (RCA) connectors on tme.eu at a lower price than on AE. PCB was manufactured at pcbs.io.

As for design improments, there is room for some/a lot. MK3 has the VGA port moved down below the din13 connector, eliminating the need for support in the casing. And no bulky 4P2T switch either.

Had to look, never seen the price of their cable and... OUCH! That's pretty steep, but I'll guess it's a fair price if it's high quality. :D

Yeah, it's a bit steep, it is a nice thick cable, but my biggest complaint is that you already have a VGA cable going to the monitor, having a really long cable in addition to that just gets in the way. So what we need for this one is to get a nice 3D printed case, then we can just attach it to the back of the STs and be happier at a much cheaper price than what the other one is. I think someone asked, and I'm not sure if it was answered, does this also include the switch to flip between high resolution and medium/low?

Granted the only fully working system I currently have that needs such an adapter is my Mega STe, which I have the Best cable for, though I do have a 1040STf that needs fixing that could use this. I may attempt to build my own, since I got a fancy soldering iron for some reason :P

Yepp. That's the red, bulky, 4P2T switch in the first picture. And one can wire it to be just either low/med- or high-res as well. Don't see the point frankly, but someone might want to have a slim VGA-adapter.

There will be a STL released as well for the casing. I won't be doing it since I haven't gotten my 3D printer yet (yaaay Kickstarter!), so I can't give any ETA on that but it will will be available at github with the Eagle-files as well.

Since the Eagle files are on Github it's up to anyone to make these and sell them just as long as one follows the license (donate €2 per board, if you make and sell more than 4).

However, I'd wait for MK3, it's in the making right now. All wired up on the breadboard. No bulky 4P2T, more or less the same manufacturing price. Will come in two versions: SMD and THT so anyone who can use a soldering iron can make one in less than 20 minutes.

Added MK3 to github.
Ordered some boards to see if the design works, have to do some testing before I say it's good to go.

I just noticed that you exceed the abs max. rating of the 74HC4053 (in MK3) when supplying it directly from 12 V.

Darnit! I could have sworn I read 15. Oh, well I'll just drop the voltage.

Edit: Now I remember. It's supposed to be a HEF4053B, same pinout higher voltage (18V). No biggie until I've cleared the design. Anyhow, thanks! :D
