Diagnostic Cartridge Rom issue

Postby veegee » Wed Jul 20, 2016 8:53 pm

Hi All,

I recently got a Mega ST4 that needed a load of TLC and after repairing the damage and replacing the missing chips it doesn't boot (black screen, CPU not HALTed, no BERR but all address lines are stuck high)

So I found the French page with the Diag Cartridge and made up a circuit board but when testing it on both the Mega and my working STE it just black screens.

I did some digging and found that the rom images need a magic number in order to boot the Diag Cartridge but looking at the downloaded images in my eprom programmer software the magic number is wrong (same in WinHex) - I've tried putting them together with WinHex and trying with Steem but it either says the cartridge has an error or if I edit in the magic number it won't boot Steem at all (With either the ST or STE images)

I can't seem to find alternative copies of these roms - am I doing something fundamentally wrong or could they just be corrupt? alternatively can someone point me towards another download!!

Many thanks in advance

Andrew

PS I have the Steem SSE ST version which I can split but would like the STE version as well.

Normally Steem SSE should boot on the diagnostic cartridge.
I just checked with v3.8.2, both the Mega ST and the STE cartridge boot.

I attach the original files I used to make the STC files that work, I'm sure they are already somewhere in this forum.

You need ST diag for Mega ST.
rom_test_kit_for_st_v4.4.zip

This one works, I am using it on my diag cart.

I found my problem with Steem - I was concatenating rather than unifying the two image files in WinHex - now I have the correct magic number and the unified file works in Steem SSE 3.8.2 - so I now know I have the right files to make this work!

Kubik - interestingly the file you linked is identical to the one I have so I may need to revisit my circuit board and see if anything untoward is going on.

Many thanks both for your help!

Yeah, the binaries are always the same, these are circulating the web for years :)
If you're stuck, just drop me a note - I still have some spare diag cart PCBs you can have.

One more thing comes to my mind - what sort of EPROMs are you using? If they're bigger than 27c256, the binary needs to be at the beginning of the EPROM.
I am used to x86 world and my first EPROMs had the diag binary at the end - and of course they didn't work :)
Also keep on mind that even when the screen is black, the diag cart can be still sending some info over the serial port.

I'm using M27C256B-15 from ST Micro, once the penny dropped about how the two files were constructed I realised my laptop wasn't corrupting them as I first thought.

I had a quick look at the board and there are definitely a couple of shorts on it, not immediately obvious but probably something to do with the close proximity of the tracks running under the IC's causing problems. I think I'll take you up on your offer of a spare PCB as it may save what's left of my hair trying to sort my one.

Thanks again and will PM you re: PCB's

Just to close this one - I received the cartridge from Kubik today - very well put together piece of kit, burned my roms and it works perfectly!

Now to see what these dead boards are doing...

Hi,

Will the MegaSTE Diagnostic Rom Image work on a TT?

I don't know but I don't think so because the STF and STE cartridges seem to be mutually exclusive, at least in Steem SSE.

Hi,

¿Where I can find the link to the pcb of these test cartridge? Can anyone share the link of the pcb files?

Thanks!!!

In the end I bought one from Kubik (see above posts) but the original site I found the circuit and roms on was here :-

Hope you get it sorted!

I tried to unify the images and boot it in STEem and it says the ROM is not correct. I even added the four 0 in the beginning. Anyone know how to unify the ROM to make it work in Steem?

EDIT: Never mind, had to upgrade STeem to latest version. Works!
