H&N Multiboard and STE

Postby Faucon2001 » Sun Mar 06, 2016 3:00 am

Hi,

I have started to connect the H&N Multiboard to my 4MB STE.
Thanks to Alanh PLCC to Socket adapter, a few risers, the board is now installed.
Image

I have connected it to the power supply +5V and ground. TOS 2.06 is booting and extra memory is active :D
Unfortunately the doc is in German, unknown language for me, and google translate has given me only a few clues.

Code: Select all

250 / 52CI f 1040 — ST Version

I have understood that I need to connect TOS 1.04 pins to pin 20 of each ROM, and put a switch between pins TOS 2.06, in order to be able to select between TOS. Also it seems that I need to connect INT pin to DMA pin 10 for IDE to work.

Could somebody confirm that I understood well and that the diagram below is correct?

"DMA Buchse" does NOT mean DMA-IC but DMA-Port (19pin DUB-D connector). I'd rather connect it to MFP Pin 27. But check it yourself.
Beware that all connections of the original manual refer to a ST not a STE!
Some things are different. The ST uses 28 pin (EP)ROMs the STE uses 32pin (EP)ROMs. Pin20 of the ST ROMs is /CE - On the STE it's Pin22.
You can get the schematics in the Download section of my HP.

Hi Frank,

Here is the scan of the original manual :http://www.philippeworld.net/ftp/Docs/H&N%20Multiboard%20manual%20German.pdf

Thanks Arne, I was going to do a big mistake.
To be honest, I have no clue if DMA port pin 10 is the same as MFP pin 27 on a STE. I'll try to give a look at the schematics but as my knowledge in electronic is very basic, I am afraid I won't understand it.

All your help is going to be useful, if not necessary.

Thanks
Philippe

I have given a quick look to the STE schematics, and ... well it's almost chinese to me

I have seen that DMA port pin 10 is called FDINT on a STFM and XHDINT on a STE
In the case of the ST it is linked to pin 27 of the MFP (XDISKINT signal)
In the case of the STE it is connected to U400 pin 15J15 (XHDINT signal)
Can you confirm that DMA port pin 10 is the right one on the picture below?(seeing it from the back, it's the 1rst pin on the left)

Regarding TOS roms, on a STE the socket is 32 pins but the rom is 28 pins. the first 2 rows of pins on the right of the socket are not connected.
When you count pin 22, is it from pin 1 of the socket or pin 1 of the rom? I am confused.

Yes I got a diskette with it, but it has only a driver for alt mem. Nothing for the ISA ET4000 adaptor.
I understood that the video card was managed directly by NVDI, but I have not gone so far yet.

Nope. Looking from the outside this is Pin 1. There should be small numbers on the black plastic when seen from the outside.

I did it again and find the same position (see photo).

So this time I hope that I am getting it right ;-)

H&N Multiboard - STE connection :

STE Rom & DMA port connection :

Zoom on STE ROM socket :

So I need, to bend both ROM pin 22 out of the socket and connect them to H&N Multiboard TOS 1.04 pins.
As there is 2 pins TOS 1.04, do I connect each one to a different ROM?

I am not sure if a Multiboard desgned for ST will work on a STE regarding TOS switching.
TOS <= 1.04 is located starting at $FC0000 and TOS > 1.04 starts at $E00000. If the chip-select logic on the multiboard is not considering a STE (what I think) then TOS switching this way will not work.

I believe it will, as the TOS address decoder on the Multiboard simply decodes $e00000 to enable it's on-board ROMs. The TOS-switch only enable/disable the motherboard ROMs, it doesn't care about addressing.

Yes the STE ROMS are 1.62.
On the H&N Multiboard, the pin to select ROMs is called TOS 1.04 (see picture above), so the correct text should be "from TOS 1.04 pin of H&N Multiboard to 1.62 ROMs socket pin22"
This board was originally done for a ST, but could with modifications work with a STE.

Thanks, I'll have a look at link.

Sa far, Tos 2.06, TT RAM and IDE hard drive are working.
Without TOS 1.62 ROMS or with pin 22 lifted, the STE refuse to boot.
So my 1.62 ROMs are back to their sockets : We'll see TOS section later

Hi,

Thanks to your help, I have now a STE with an H&N Multiboard, TOS 2.06, 12 MB memory, 4 GB IDE memory disk :D
I still have to install the ISA sister card, the ET4000, and also solve this TOS selection issue.
One thing at a time 8)

Does somebody have by chance the drivers for the ET4000 and the H&N Multiboard ?
Mine came with a diskette containing only a driver for extra ram / TT Ram.
I guess it needs a little more to work.

I am guessing from the STE Tos switching wiki article that you need 32 pin instead of 28 pin Tos 1.62 roms and then lift pin 24 on each to connect on the H&N to do the switching. This is just me saying what I see, maybe let one of the others consider what I have suggested first.

It's what's marked on the H&N board silkscreen for the original tos CE pin. It was designed for STFM so has 1.4 printed on the board, though presumably back in the day you could could have fitted one to an STFM with TOS 1.2.
