Pad problem

Postby darkstalker » Sun Apr 11, 2004 11:09 pm

Hello all :)
I have a question, certainly stupid, but hey ...
I found an atari 1040 STe, but i don't have the manual.
The problem is that when i plug an Genesis pad in the atari, the only thing i can do is firing (tested on R-Type II official version).
It's the same if i plug in the firts or the second game port, except that fire is the B or C button.

Is there something to know ?
SEGA incompatibility, spécial trick ? It's the same on a 520 STe ... I used to have one beiing young, but i don't remember problems like that ...

So ? i'm really stupid ? :D

Hi!

The standard ST 9pin port only supports a simple joystick or pad - 4 directions - two fire buttons. I know the STE and Falcon have two additional ports (on the left side), that support paddles and a light pen. I don't know this SEGA pad. From you description I assume your pad will NOT fit. I think it has been designed a "generation" later.

Here is the pinout of the Atari ST joystick:
1 XB
2 XA
3 YA
4 YB
5 NC
6 BUTTON 1
7 +5V
8 GND
9 BUTTON 2

Thank you for the answer :)

in fact i tried a megadrive 6 buttons, then a megadrive 3 buttons.
maybe i should try a master system 2 buttons one :)
(or find a real atari pad :p)

fix the joystick / mouse ports on the keyboard

they have dry or broken connections on the ports

yes but the mouse works ok

this is normal
as the joystick uses different pinouts
all must be right

after you fix the ports

add port extenders so you dont have to lift it up and loosen the delicate sockets too much

see simbo's hardware faq on keyboard rejuvenation
