Brilliant work ! Thank you for yours productions.

I'm very interested in this MonSTer + MegaST adaptator. 8MB AltRAM + TOS 2.06 will give new mojo to my very old and good MegaST (the one I used for GFA coding, before the FireBee).

Is installation easy? I'm not able to do any soldering on the 68K.

Yes, it's easy, and no soldering required.

I have a mega st that would love this kind of upgrade,
when will it be available? I would like to purchase one,
along with the mega adapter board... :)

i am also looking for a reasonably priced network interface... :)
I think i better get myself a GAL programmer, so i can build my own.
My ST computers get very jealous of my Amiga computers and their PCMCIA wifi cards... :)

If that's right, then you'll need to modify the older 8MB RAM board to turn off the last 2MB, and I can show you what to do there.

But the MonSTer is software configured so no problem for this board.

The MegaST/STFM version will be onsale within the next week or two. The STE/MegaSTE version will follow in a few weeks time.

As for a network card, I have some older EtherNEC's very cheap if you don't mind the size.

How far out of the cart port do they sit? I was looking at NetUSBee but because my machine is towered the motherboard is too close to the bottom of the chassis. I'd have to make some serious modifications. If I can hotwire one in I'd be interested in eathernec.

Not relevant for the MonSTer thread, but for the EtherNEC you can see the pictures here....

http://www.freemint.org/ethernec/ethernec.html

The ROM port part doesn't stick out much at all and then you can fit the ISA card at the back of your tower. They are ideal for towers.

One way is to cut the outer row of pins from the cartridge port, bend the connector to 90 degrees and re-solder it. Bit of a hack but does get the job done.

Hi all,

One thing I haven't mentioned yet with the MonSTer is it's ability to take a Real Time Clock module (RTC) as I'd just been finishing up the software for that too. So I'm ready to announce it :-)

Here's screenshot of an off-the-shelf module I'm using. It's a Dallas DS1338 RTC module. It only takes four pins from the MonSTer board to attach to these standard RTC modules. They're available all over the place, so I don't need to provide them. And the Megas already have an RTC anyway.

The one here I bought for 6GBP locally, but there are a few variants around based on the DS1338.

Update time....

There is a jumper block on the board called the JBLOCK.

It has 18 pins. The top row is 3.3v and the bottom row GND. The mid-row is the following..

TOSSEL FLASHSW FLASHON IDESW SCL SDA

Explanation of each...

TOSSEL - This is valid only for STFM/MegaST with TOS 1.xx.
When set to GND, the system boots from 0xE00000 i.e. TOS 2.xx
When set to 3.3V, the system boots from 0xFC0000 i.e. TOS 1.xx

FLASHSW - The MonSTer has a 2MB Flash chip, and only the first 1MB is
mapped for the system to boot at 0xE00000 or 0xFC0000.
This switch flips the second 1MB into the 0xE00000 or 0xFC0000
window, so you can flash the second part of the chip for
swapping boot images.

FLASHON - This disables access to 0xE00000/0xFC0000. For recovery mode.
If you ever run into problems, you can install the original
ROMs and re-run the flash program which will write to the first
1MB region to get this going again. Use the FLASHSW once running
to write to the second 1MB region again.

IDESW - This flips the primary and secondary IDE ports as per the old Doubler card.

SDA/SCL - For connection of the RTC module.

Oh, and because we have access to 1MB on the Flash chip, it means TOS can get patched and be bigger than the normal 192K/256K too.

Or possibly, the unused flash area could be set as a boot disk. No software for that yet though, but possible.

Hi folks.

This STFM/MegaST board is being offered at 50GBP + shipping. If you are after one for the MegaST, you'll probably need the MegaST adapter board too.

I've got 8 boards available in this first batch, first come first served. Please let me know if you're interested as I'll be soldering more up this weekend.

STE/MegaSTE will be a few more weeks as I'm finalizing the boards.

Thanks.

Hello,

I would like to get my named connected to one of the first eight STFM/ MEGA ST MonSTer boards . I will need the Mega Bus adapter too. I assume I don't need any dedicated 2.06 rom chips now due to this board's "roms" being in flash memory?

A heart felt thank you from Texas for your continued development of the ST!

Correct. No need for dedicated roms now, but keep your old ones for failsafe if you ever need to reflash from scratch.

Can I use my old TOS 1.04 Roms for a failsafe situation ?

In failsafe you need to install them, and move a jumper on the board to turn off the boot flash. Then you can re-flash with your old ROMs in place.

Once you are running again, you must remove the TOS 1.04 roms as they clash at bootup due to ROM2 access if you were trying to boot TOS 2.06 too.

Alternatively, you can disconnect the CE pin (i.e. tie to 5V) on the old ROMs to a switch and leave them in place and just disable your old ROMS with the switch.

Yes, I've tested 1.04 & 2.06, and I don't see any reason Magic wouldn't work either.
