I need something to diagnose a faulty Atari Falcon with black screen. Do you have any Atari Testkit All-In-One or similar to offer me?

I can also buy just the PCB if there are schematics somewhere from where I can look the required compontents and if the .hex is available somewhere for me to prom it.

Reply here or PM me, anyone please.

Hi,
Is it any chance to order Testkit or to find gerber/pcb files to order boards by my self?

No 3rd batch!? That's too bad, I have a 1040STf with some wonky video issues, and a Mega STe that needs some resurrecting. Sounds like this would have been the kit to get.
Atari 8Bits: 800xl, 600xl, XEGS, 800, 130xe, 130xe (VBXE, U1MB, Stereo POKEY)
Atari STs: 1040STf (broken shifter), 1040STe, Mega STe, TT030, Falcon (CT60e, SuperVidel)

If I design a new "test kit" are people actually going to buy it ? I've started to many projects in the past where loads of people say they want something, then when its time to "pay" they all vanished.

Then tell us what the product would be first, then take pre-orders (with payment) to cover the manufacturing. I value the work you and others are doing enormously when it comes to supporting our old computers and I really don't want anyone to go out of pocket and risk losing money.

Initially it would be the PCB with a PLCC ROM which will hold the ROMs from all test carts. I've not looked into what ROM's are out there. I only have the ST kit ROM from my own cart. I think they are probably online, though not sure if they work. So would prefer a new dump from people who have the various test carts already.

The PLCC ROM is needed (at least for me) as the slower eproms don't work at 16mhz. But with 16bit PLCC ROM's already in my stock with the socket, it be silly not to use them.

I've not looked into case's. Should should be assumed it doesn't come with one. I am building a 3D printer to print cases for stuff, but likely someone else would have to design the case as I just don't have time to finish the printer, never mind learn the software aswell.

As for price, no clue. Can't see it being more than £15-£25 at a guess. Depends on how many people want the thing. If its low numbers like <10 then I will probably make the PCB's myself. if its >20 then might be worth getting a proper PCB run done on them. PCB price will come down a lot the more which are made. Though its not cost-effective to do a lot of "self made" PCB's.

Taking pre-orders is fine, though what price ? If one person orders then it could be £50 for that person. If 10 people order, then it could be £20 a kit. This is why I generally just get stuff built at my own expense to give people the best value. Though I have so much invested in stock already, I don't really want to end up with another product which never sells enough to cover costs.

I'm not really that price sensitive - and as I've offered to do before I'll happily design a case (I have a 3d printer and I'm reasonably capable with CAD)

I just want the eco system to be healthy ;) There are a few who have shown interest in this thread. PM us all to see if we're still interested at a price point that makes sense - and then take pre-order payment at that price.

(Although, I understand that you have other things you're currently spending your time with of course)

Ahh yes, I knew someone offered cases before, couldn't remember who :) You might have to keep reminding me now and then ;) If you can print them, its probably something you could supply to people anyway ? Obviously I will have to have a more in-depth talk about whats possible and what holes to put in the PCB etc at some point.

Leave it with me, I will see if I can make a start on a PCB layout. I have the ST-kit ROM, so I can flash that and get a prototype PCB made. I can't see it taking long to complete overall.

Probably as I have hi-jacked someone else's thread, I will open a new one in due course. Possible this thread should then be closed thereafter ?

Thanks, I had seen that site before, though wasn't sure if the ROM's were working or not.

An idea maybe...not so profit oriented though.

The individual cart images are available, I also think that Arne made his dump available at some point as well. I might have it I have to check (if not I have the cart in question anyway). Probably there's no copyright involved.
But if somebody like Chris could design the pcb and release the file so the others can make their own pcb and burn the eprom, solder the parts, etc.

Not having the option to order I was about to copy the cart for myself (but luckily got one before started the project) so I have some stuff to share with you Chris. Maybe you'd only need to draw the cart into a pcb designer if you don't want to add the plcc eprom. Or modify it if you wish. Let me know if you need them.

Opening a new thread is a good idea.

The PCB design for the Eprom version are already published on the website posted before, along with the ROM's. So people can already make their own if they wish. No need for me to get involved with that.

I am more talking about producing the kit/PCB, which involves minimum orders. if I am to make the PCB, as it seems that is what mostly people are asking, I'm not going to do that unless there is enough orders to cover the costs for the PCB run.

If you can dump your ROM then it would save some work in merging separate files and save some testing :)

Ha, of course my luck. Got mine in, tested out both the 1040ST and the Mega STe. The 1040ST of course said was fine, so I still need to track down what could cause the weird missing pixels in the vertical lines. The Mega STe seems to want to display video, but just gives a white screen like it does before.

Time to get the cables to set up for the deeper diagnostics to see I can get more information.

Thanks to investigations http://atariforum.team-yankee.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4 by user crashman there is a pretty good chance that people with a testkit that contains SuperMon (SMON on the EPROM's sticker) also contains UltimateRipperCartridge. I have checked it on my 1040STE:
  • Set the single jumper to activate the testkit
  • set the selection jumpers to ::::| (leftmost jumper near the cart's connector is set)
  • switch on ST(E)
  • there should be no sync signals for the connected CRT/TFT
  • press F1
  • press F2
  • wait 6s
Then the URC main menu should appear.
Can anyone confirm that procedure?

Thanx, Arne

Mega ST4: White screen (with sync signals) on boot/after reset. Pressing F1 reveals a fake "no sync signal" screen (UR is trying to find a suitable space in memory IIRC?). But then nothing happens, no matter what key I press. I have a proper UR laying around somewhere, I think it's just me not remembering what I should press ...

(Or the MonSTer is tripping something up)

I tried it on my MST4. Press F1 or F2 and just wait ~8s. The second keystroke doesn't seem to be necessary.
Works fine here.
