Re: NEW IDE Controller & TOS 2.06 board (with extras)

Postby Fujiyama » Wed Oct 23, 2013 12:32 pm

After a LOT of struggle I finally managed to insert the IDE board into my Mega STe. It took a lot of wiggling with a needle and even removing the CPU a couple of times.
Unfortunately the computer doesn't power up any longer and I've removed the IDE board w/wires just to make sure its not causing the trouble.

The internal SCSI hard drive powers up and boots, so I know it's getting power, but there's nothing on the screen, no floppy drive booting etc. I suspect the CPU having contact issues but having tried to wiggle the pins back many times it's still a no go.

I'm going to continue trying it out but how hard is it to replace the PLCC socket? Is it just a matter of desoldering (hopefully it'll be soldered to just the bottom side of the PCB)?
I figure that if I replace the PLCC socket I might as well put the CPU into the socket first, then the IDE board and finally solder the socket (with CPU/IDE board inserted) to the Mega STe motherboard.
If I decide to do that, are there other, better suited sockets that allow stacking of PCBs as with the IDE board, or should I just replace it with a similar IC socket?

Oh dear, sorry to hear that.

The best way to fix it, is to take the CPU back out. Use the pin and pull the legs from the bottom as they are upside-down U shaped. Pull them out by around 1mm or so and then push the CPU back in and check it boots up first.

Then try revisiting the IDE board.

The STFM, MegaST and STacy are all the same IDE boards. They need to be soldered onto the 68000, preferably soldering a socket first, then plugging the IDE board on.

TOS 2.06 is the tricky part. As the STacy needs manual work for that.

Just curious Alan - what would it take to get your board to work with a stock
STacy, and give it TOS 2.06?

Thanks.

EDITED...

Not much. The STacy uses 1001 32 pin chips already, so it's probably just a case of getting the new CE pin across to them from the IDE board.

I should give this a try at some point, but my office is upside-down at the moment.

Okay, as I said I was just curious. :)

Oh, BTW - congrats - HDDriver v9.0 is out and according to the
news release it now specifically supports your device (its even
mentioned there).

It was mentioned in the 8.46 notes too.

But 9.0 supports the STFM boards ability to now stack them, so it can support 8 IDE devices.

The STE board doesn't support this as it's not stackable. I need to get Uwe to correct this on the notes.

ooh v9 is nice :)

I might make some time to re partition my Ultra as i've gained a collection of cards since I last played with it.
In theory, it should 'see' a 4gig card and let me make 8 512k partitions yes ? or is there a limit on the cards capacity ? I'm only checking as I have a 6gig IDE drive in my mega thats got a load of 500meg partitions and works a treat.

cheers :)

The posty delivered my ST IDE and ROM upgrade boards today, quicker than I expected.

I cant wait to get these beauty's installed in my STFM, unfortunately that's not going to be until after Christmas.

Is there a guide for fitting the IDE board in a STFM? I've seen one for the megst and ste but not the STFM.

Many thanks to protek for recommending this project to me when I posted pictures, on AmiBay, of the installation of exxos's 4MB simm adapter.

Hi alanh,

I would like to order an IDE controller & TOS 2.06 board. Unfortunately, I'm new here and can not send a PM.
How can I order the IDE controller & TOS 2.06 board?

Does anyone use this controller with PAK ?
It is generally known that PAK "doesn't like" IDE devices :)

No reason why it shouldn't. I do have a couple of PAK's though. So I can try it.

That is what I ran into with the Marpet 8 Meg Ram board and the IDE Doubler. Couldn't put the lid back on the Mega ST. Finally just removed the Marpet and lid closed fine.
