CD-ROM or CD-RW on Atari

Postby TheNameOfTheGame » Fri Aug 17, 2012 2:49 pm

Hello,

I am thinking of hooking a cdrom or cdrw to my atari. I haven't done this since the 90s so I forget all about it.

I have extendos 2.3 and a link adapater with a hard drive, so I seem to recall I can hook a cdrom at the end of the scsi chain with id 1 and a terminator.

Are there any links to lists of compatible external drives? From what I am reading, the link doesn't work with drives needing parity so I wanted to get the right kind.

Thanks.

Some of my SCSI writers have a jumper on the back to disable parity and to enable termination, plus I tend to use ID0 unless a hard disk is connected of course.

Thanks. Duh, that is exactly what I was looking for. I was on their website and never saw it.

I am a little concerned because I emailed them to ask about compatibility and they haven't replied. Makes me a little hesitant to buy v4. I have v2.3 currently, but would definitely upgrade if they are still taking orders.

Anyway, thanks for the links.

Roger posted here about his monitor just last week. So leave him a PM about it.

Ok, cool, I can tell right away Anodyne has a good reputation still. To be fair it was only a couple days after I emailed him and people are busy in real life so it is no big deal.

Thanks for the feedback.

Well, I never got a reply on email. Could you post his username here so I can pm him? Thank you.

Hello all,
just to ask something - I have STF with ICD LInk adapter and got recently Yamaha 4416 I'd like to use as CD ROM on STF...I tried Extendos but it bombs out...I supposed that Link doesn't work with CDRW device because of lack of bus arbitration, but I found some posts on the net of people claiming they use CD RW or ROM devices with Link, so I'm puzzled now if I could still use Yamaha 4416 as CD ROM only on STF with ICD Link?

Do you have the Link or Link 2? The second version works fine, I use one with a
SCSI CDRW, and can read/write/burn up to 2x. I use it for backup on my BBS setup.

IIRC, and that's a big IIRC, when I had the original Link, I was able to use CDRW's
as CDROMs, but I couldn't write...

I don't remember ExtenDOS/CDWriter ever bombing out though - it simply didn't
work. That part makes me suspicious...

I have Link, i.e. the older model...I understand it won't work with CDRW because lack of scsi bus arbitration, but I'd like to use it only for reading part if possible...What CD driver you used it with?

Is the CD-Rom following a hard disk in the chain? I had some problems with a Yamaha and a Link connector (I'm not sure whether mine is 1 or 2), but it usually takes a bit of fiddling with both the settings/ jumpers on the hard disk and the CD-ROM. Things to check are..

The hard drive is not internally terminated (if its first in the chain)
Arbitration is sorted out
The CD drive is terminated (if it's at end of chain). And not in a John Connor style
Try different drive IDs to 1 as well.

You really have to open the hard disk (presuming its a SCSI one) and the CD drive and fiddle with the jumpers one by one, powering off, changing the jumper and then powering on and trying the drive in between each change.

Other things to try depend on what HD software you are using, deleting any config files and starting fresh can help with HD Driver, same thing goes for Extendos, wipe any earlier configs. Which version are you using btw?

Different cable to the CD might also be worth trying..

thanx for the reply...i removed hdd from scsi chain and boot from floppy with cdr set to "no parity / term on", there are really no other settings to change...i think i tried it with extendos 3.4 and metados using both spin and scsi cd bos drivers but no driver recognizes the cd device...which *.bos / *.dos combination should i use? :?:
