Sprite Editor

Postby Arne » Tue Apr 25, 2017 9:45 am

I'm looking for a Sprite Editor supporting Falcon's 256 colour mode. Supporting 16x16 pixel, better 32x32 pixel. Is it available somewhere?

You could try programming one yourself with GFA Basic 3.6TT perhaps? On my falc, 256-colour mode doesn't work in the standard editor, but will work when compiled and run from the desktop. Also with gfa basic you need to remember the maximum string variable size is 32 kb(same as ST screen), as it stores bitmaps in strings. http://paradize.final-memory.org/gfabasic.shtml I have used some of these example codes.

I have been using Apex Media for such tasks. Even if it were 20+ years ago...

GFA 3.6 editor can run in 256 color modes with this:

Bastard 4.0 doesn't start on my falc, and it crashes the computer after screen mode change.

I use it on my Hades for many years at 1280x1024 in 256 colors. I currently use it on aranym 1600x1024 in 256 colors. I don't know what you mean by "after screen mode change". I am already in 256 color mode when I start, no mode changes here.

After I tried starting it from 256-color low res, the falcon crashes when switching back to st-low. I have TOS 4.04, 14 Megs, Putnik's HD Driver, CF card. Tried on a "minimal" hd partition with no accs or auto programs.

I would propose heretic solution: doing it on PC, with some better Paint program, or if such exists, dedicated sprite editor.
Saving as 256 color, palette based BMP format - what is easy to convert to Falcon display format. I use Paint Shop Pro 9 (last Adobe free version).
Negative feedback has usually positive effect.

I tried it on Hatari as I don't have a Falcon anymore and it seems to work if I set video mode: 256 colors, 80 columns, interlace On or double line Off
Config file I used:

SetProjectPath :=0
LoadFileAndRun :=0
Bell :=0
Scrambler :=1
HardwareBlit :=1
NoClock :=0
FreMemory :=0
MinMemory :=0
SetAesName :=GFABASIC
GfaBasicPath :=C:\CODE\GFA\GFABASIC.PRG
SetDefaultPath :=C:\
Fileselector :=

You will need to adjust "GfaBasicPath" of course.
Then start bastard.prg.
