Associate file extension with program

Postby jotego » Sat Oct 01, 2016 11:28 am

We are now used to having programs opening files by their extension. But, is it possible in the Atari ST using regular TOS? Has that something to do with the so called "desktop accesories"?

I would like to program such an application but I am not sure whether the system supports it in the first place...

TOS 2.06 supports associating extensions with programs: http://www.atari-wiki.com/index.php/Installation_and_setup_examples

You can do it in all versions of TOS (well at least from 1.02 up).
Highlight any program and select 'Install Application' from the 'Options' menu. From there you can associate a file extension with that program. From that point on, you can double click an associated data file to load it automatically into the application.

In order for these file associations to survive a reboot, you must save the desktop.
