Does it require ROM cartridge to run?

IMHO this is more interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contiki

While it doesn't have X like Idris has, it's supposed to have pre-emptive multithreading, TCP/IP networking (including IPv6), GUI and remote display with VNC... Wikipedia page claims that there's Atari ST port, has anybody seen / tried it?

Thanks, I just tested it.

That AtariST version seems to be from 2003, the initial Contiki release. It runs on top of TOS (instead of being independent OS), is slow (and pretty ugly :-)) and doesn't do much.

Most of the nice Contiki features have been added later later on, as can be seem from release changelog:
http://www.contiki-os.org/download.html

Unfortunately AtariST isn't listed as supported by the current Contiki code, only 8-bit Atari versions:
http://www.contiki-os.org/hardware.html

Looking at the code, I don't see any 680x0 specific support for it either:
https://github.com/contiki-os/contiki/tree/master

So somebody would need to write some code before it works again on Atari...

A few years ago I have tracked down someone who has source code of Idris 2.2. for 68K. He wanted to port it to ARM. Let me check the latest.

Didn't Toad Computers sell this on a ROM Cartridge you plugged into the ST cartridge port?
