PARCP-USB

Postby joysfera » Sat Aug 02, 2014 5:35 am

Hello all,

if you happen to know my PARCP or if you would need to copy files easily between Atari and another machine that does not have a parallel port but does have USB you might be interested in PARCP-USB.

Thanks,
Petr

I love ParCP and use my copy frequently for getting files over to my stock Falcon.

Having a USB version would finally allow me to retire the very old laptop I've had to keep solely for this application, so it's very desirable from my perspective.

If you could also compile your app for the mac as well, then it would tick all the boxes.

Hi,

I have found this already existing parallel USB adapter.

It's expensive, but would it work for your project?

Great project. This is exactly what people with modern computers and Ataris need.

It's a good idea. But instead of building a dedicated device - why not just use a $16 Teensy and a D25 connector?

Jo Even, I plan on using HW very similar to Teensy so that's sorted out.

An OSX binary is not impossible but since I don't own a Mac I cannot promise anything. I can try cross compiling the source code one day if there are such tools for Linux.

I'd be interested in a PARCP-USB if the Atari side software will work with MiNT aswell - and there is going to be a Linux backend on the PC end.
Sounds tempting to me in many respects :)

the existing parcp works with mint already so i would imagine the usb version should work also.

Simon, PARCP works under MiNT since the very beginning (there is a screenshot with PARCP running in TosWin2 window on the PARCP Screenshots page). PARCP also supports MiNT long file names etc.
And of course Linux backend (and also frontend) is there for 15+ years as well.

I think I'll update the page with the names of guys who were interested in buying the PARCP-USB so it's clear who's in :)

If this device could also be used as a more affordable alternative to the LPT2USB device for communicating with USB printers, I would be put my name down for one.

Hi joysfera, can you please give us a quick update on your progress?

I hope you´re still considering to make PARCP-USB.

Alright, I am back with an update on the progress. I've been working on it so hard for the last three months that I've almost given up on sleep. It eats every single spare minute of my time. The detailed report is at the bottom of the PARCP-USB page but the short story is that I've got a working prototype (a third one actually) and I am finishing the firmware (fifth major version, basically).

Everything seems to work very well on my computers at home (Falcon with Afterburner040 and a couple of PCs) and I am going to test it on more Atari machines (ST, TT, plain Falcon) soon. I am also preparing for making a first batch of the production units. There's going to be 10 pieces of the PARCP-USB adapters in the first batch. If there's enough interest I will gladly make another batch afterwards. Please note that I need to make 10 pieces at once to buy the components with a small discount (otherwise I couldn't even buy the components for the price I'd like to sell the final unit!).

The simple idea I got in July evolved into one of biggest challenges I've ever worked on. I have designed the hardware from the ground up, written the firmware for the microcontroller and also the PC side of USB software. And I am going to solder all the components in the adapters by my hands :) It's actually pretty exciting to watch it grow and progress. Hopefully you'll find it useful and will want to own one (or more :))

That reminds me that I would really like to get in touch with those that are willing to buy it. Please email me (my email is at bottom of the PARCP-USB page).

I'll bring more details and photos with the first production unit soon, hopefully.

I only want to say, that I'am still interested in this project! :-)

I would like to chime in here to say I'm interested, as this would seem to be the most economical and convenient way to backup my ST to my PC. It's a very cool project.
