Re: MagiC 6.20

Postby Saturnin51 » Thu Sep 16, 2010 6:44 pm

I have installed Magic 6.2 on my Falcon 14 Mo but it doesn't work. I have the message "MagiC -Booter © 1990-96 Andreas Kromke" and that's all ! The only thing Ican do is to switch off and switch on the Falcon.

Only NVDI 5 is loaded and Fpatch2.

Have you some explanations please ?

I have Magic 5, purchased long time ago, and it runs perfectly 8O

Using 6.1e here...not yet tried any of the cracked versions and the Ash updater to 6.2 doesn't work with the English version :(

Do you have an FPU (math co-processor) in your Falcon?
I had some problems with MagiC a while back.
When I took out the FPU it started working.
When I put the FPU back in, it kept on working.

My guess is that the FPU just needed re-seating. MagiC must have been trying to initialize the FPU and crashing where regular TOS just ignores it until some application that wants it calls for it? Actually that's what made me check the FPU...tried to run Studio SON fpu version on plain TOS/GEM and it crashed with an error about the FPU.

At any rate...resetting my FPU in the socket fixed it! The Falcon had set up for a while and I guess the chip just lost contact somewhere.

Another thing you can try...the Magicboot32 auto program instead of the regular magicboot. It should be in the Gemsys/Magic folder somewhere. I think this might enable memory protection as well...I forget exactly but I did get a MagiC setup that was dang hard to crash...individual apps that don't like Magic much anyway crashed sometimes...but it rarely ever brought down the whole thing.

Other things to check:
Check that your floppy drive is working ok. Is the floppy drive empty when you boot magic? Try it empty (no floppy), and with a good 'blank' disk in the drive.

Either way...give the floppy skip patch a try. It makes magic ignore the floppy drive on boot...speeds the boot up considerably...and it's so very rare that you'd ever want to run anything from a floppy with MagiC at boot time anyway. Yes...the floppy drive still works once MagiC is up and running.

The running order in the autofolder matters, but you are probably aware of that. First magxboot, then nvdi.

Fpatch2 must go, it's not needed with MagiC and might even mess things up.

Better yet, just use Jinnee, Thing, or TeraDesk in whatever language you want ;)
Suji or File Finder in whatever language you want.
Then you just need rsc files for the shutdown and toswin program (and maybe a couple of others that one rarely sees...no biggie to live with the German there).

I do not have MagiC curently installed but you should have in dropdown menu option "applications" and in that window you can add as many as you like filetypes to one application (on left side are filetype and on right application if I remember correctly :)).
