Also Pinhead, that force media change prg and poolfix.prg (for TOS 1.04) spring to mind. Some of these are pretty essential (particularly folderXX I would say, unless you're using HD Driver).

Also your entry for UIS III has screenshots of the normal GEM/TOS file selector, rather than UIS, which doesn't look anything like GEM's version. :)

Great idea. I have indeed folderxxx on my other website (Atari ST - Non-Essential software). Maybe we should consider it Essential

I'll move it from the Non-Essential to the Essential website, and add FASTSPEED.

Thanks a lot for the contribution.

Here they said: TOS 1.4 has a rewritten FAT lookup routine that fixes this problem. (Don't use FATSPEED with TOS 1.4.)

I guess should be Don't use FATSPEED with TOS 1.4 and up, right?

Yes, I stopped using it after I had a disk loadable TOS 1.04, and certainly not on TOS 2.06.

Also I didn't notice any screen capture utilities in the list... there's a great one called the Supreme Screen Snatcher, which bound itself to the alt-help vector and the modem port.

Another handy thing is a replacement desktop show program like this one, since the TOS file viewer sucks badly.

Wery good usefull site. Non demo non shareware soft, AtariSince1989 :D
If you guys expirience hardware problems.
1. Always remove chips if possible before soldering.
2. Resolder your hardware, check cables too.
3. If problem continue THEN must be faulty software.

I got 2 Atari ST
Main is stfm, with blitter, with 4 meg of ram, with 16mhz cpu + s-video and audio input to videobox, vdi out
P.S.
My english may not be correct

Hey guys.

Whilst on the subject of essential software.... how do you customise GEM? Is there an Atari equivalent of NickPrefs etc? How do you display a backdrop image on the GEM desktop (TOS 2.06 on a 4mb STe)?

Are there any good screen savers? Replacement Icon sets? Also, is there an Atari ST PD repository (like Aminet for the Amiga)?

I recently purchased an STe, upgraded it to 4mb and TOS 2.06 and purchased a Satandisk and Im having a ball with it. Any help or suggestions would be welcome.

Take a look at AF Wiki on Tos 2.06 guide
wiki/index.php?title=TOS_2.06_in-depth_user_guide

Among other things, there mention how to change the icons.

There's a few repositories like UMich.

IIRC there are a couple of desk accessories which allow you to put a background image on the desktop, hopefully you'll find one there :)

Thanks guys, will check out those links.

Also, I have seen a couple of games that really push the ST hardware to the limits to make it do things never thought possible (smooth horizontal multi layer parallax scrolling etc). Can you guys suggest some games, demos etc that really push the hardware?

most games by Thalion were well coded. have a look here: http://thalion.exotica.org.uk/
'enchanted land' is one of my favourites.

as for demos, anything recent by DHS is simply spectacular:

Cernit Trandafir in particular is a real treat.

The bitmap brothers knew how to push the hardware also.
TT030: 4MB/16MB + Crazy Dots, Mega"SST" 12, STacy 2, MegaSTE, STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's

Vroom?
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

Just found a newer sysinfo version online. Might be good to pick the last one available: http://cd.textfiles.com/suzybatari2/uti ... sin837.prg

Another well respected music creation tool is MusicMon v2.5: http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=18929
Just my 5 cents...

That sounds pretty amazing... maybe if I had that in the 90s, I wouldn't have been late for everything!

...Then again, now I have a mobile phone and Google calendar etc, and I still can't get out of bed before 11am so... ;)
