ao486: what do you use to transfer files?

Postby Newsdee » Wed Dec 19, 2018 4:22 pm

What do you use to copy files over to VHD to use with ao486?

I tried creating an image with the Simple VHS manager from Sordum.org, but it is not recognized by DOS.
I then reformatted the drive from within the core using DOS instlall floppies, but now I can't open the VHD under Windows (it asks to format).

Do I need to use FAT formatting instead of FAT32? Or am I missing something? (perhaps the VHS manager isn't the right program)

formatting of vhd depends on the os you plan to install, ie dos, win 3.1, win 95, os 2 etc

Mostly DOS.

Will give that link a try. Good info for the wiki or readme actually, I can update it after I try it...

I have used Disk Management of Windows 10 to create the VHD then installed DOS 6.22 on it from floppy images.

Which format did you use? FAT16 or FAT32?

I don't remember. If you have the choice, go for FAT16 if you are interested by DOS since FAT32 came later with Windows 95.

If you're on a Mac, just change ".vhd" to ".img" and double-click the image. It will mount and you can copy stuff to it. When done, unmount the image (drag mounted icon to trash) and rename the ".img" to ".vhd". You're good to go!

I'm just using Disk Management for Win 7. Top menu lets you create a VHD and mount it within Windows. Then you can format before dumping files on. Unmount the VHD using the same menu. I keep the 2GB FAT VHD mounted as the primary drive in ao486 core, with the DOS 6.22 install disk #1 IMG also mounted. If I change the boot priority to FDD first, I can reinstall DOS 6.22 easily. I also created a secondary 2GB VHD for more games that would not fit on the primary VHD. I keep that mounted as secondary VHD in ao486.

Most of the Windows 10 users are getting such kind of similar errors like adobe error code df024 that definitely solved by them. These booting issues should be recovered by them to access in an efficient manner.

I must be doing something wrong, I'm using Win10 but I can't open the VHD under Windows.
Here's what I do:

1) Create a vhd and attach it in Disk Manager
2) Then I format it to FAT from Windows 10 (i.e. FAT16)
3) Transfer the file to MiSTer, mount it from ao486 and reboot
4) It's not recognized by DOS, i.e. I can't d:\ into it
5) If I reinstall DOS it will reformat and wipe out the data
6) If I trasnfer back the (5) VHD file into Windows, it prompts me to reformat it after mounting it

What am I doing wrong? Does the format in 2) have to use specific settings?

Probably MBR/non-MBR format conflicts.
ao486 requires MBR, so it's like raw dump from the whole HDD with possible several partitions inside.

Any docs on how can I create a VHD with a MBR? I suppose it would have to be DOS compatible and not Win10?

I partition and format in ao486. Then can use some mounting tools like ImDisk to copy the files to VHD.
