Atari 800/5200 VHD question

Postby NML32 » Sat May 19, 2018 5:08 pm

Sorgelig, what takes precedence the second sd card or the vhd file?

I have the boot.vhd booting and games load just fine without the second sd card inserted.
My secondary sd has Atari 800 (optional), Atari 5200 (optional), and MSX all on one sd card. So I'm wondering if I leave the second card in will the Atari 800 read from the vhd or sd card.

At this point, I'm not sure if I prefer running the roms off the secondary sd or the vhd. I guess it'll depend on how easy it is to add ROMs to the vhd file.

Thanks

VHD takes precedence. So if you will have boot.vhd, the core won't use secondary SD card.
As always, VHD can be unmounted by BACKSPACE key while selecting, so core will start to use the secondary SD card.

Or you may have VHD with other name, so it won't autoload at start in case if you prefer to use the secondary SD.

MSX will follow the same update when i will fix its strange SPI module.

It took me a bit to figure out how to get the Atari 5200 vhd to autoboot.

The main SD folder needs to be named Atari5200 with an "i" and the root folder in the VHD needs to be named Atar5200 without the "i".
name the vhd boot.vhd for it to auto-boot.

There is a general rule for all cores except special ones (Minimig,Archie,ao486) for rom and vhd files for autoload/automount at start:

Option 1:
Place the file (rom/vhd) with the same name as core ID (name in OSD) together with RBF.

Option 2:
Place the file boot.rom/boot.vhd into subfolder with the same name as core ID (name in OSD).

As for Atari 5200 - agree it's confusing but unlikely will be changed. Atari5200 folder (and file) name comes from core ID. I don't want to change it to Atar5200 'cause it will look strange. Atar5200 name set inside the Atari5200 ROM due to 8.3 name restriction.

Agreed, that's why I posted it here. Maybe it will help someone that's struggling to get the VHD to load.

MSX core also got VHD support.
