Main menu 1080p60 problems (and some other misc stuff)

Postby Locutus73 » Sat Mar 10, 2018 3:03 pm

Hi,
today I tried to setup MiSTer to 1080p60 in order to get rid of TV scaling, but I found something strange in the Main Menu: the graphics seem garbled, like some weird deinterlacing is taking place. Here is a picture
Image
https://i.imgur.com/k68qqyV.jpg
other cores (I tested Minimig, C64, MegaDrive and PCEngine) seem to be unaffected.

Then some miscellanea:
1) Sometimes I get some audio cracklings. I didn’t find a consistent way to reproduce the issue (I know, I’m a dev myself, I hate when someone says “sometime, I don’t know how, I have some issues”). The only constant behaviour seems to be that, when I get cracklings, I can solve them only power cycling the DE10-Nano
2) I found that cores search for rom/floppy/hd images first in /media/fat/<core_name> where core_name is defined in CONF_STR and then in /media/fat. I.e. TurboGrafx16 searches its roms first in /media/fat/TGFX16. Now it would be nice to have a list of this core names in order to give a proper name to roms directories.

Thank you in advance,
best regards.

Open OSD and the name you see on the left white stripe is the same as default directory name for this core.

Menu core may have some glitches on FullHD. It doesn't use scaler and the way you see currently is the best i could make.
It's not exactly happening to everyone (it doean't happen on my boards) but may happen. Cooling down may improve results.

it more look like non-DE10 related problem. With every core loading you get fully reloaded FPGA and problem cannot migrate from core to core if it's not always present.

Great, thanks.

I would like to add a 3) to misc stuff: what is the file limit x folder for the file browser? I find it very easy to reach it with not so big romsets. I can split big directories in subfolders (i.e. based on the first letter of the file), some romsets (like SmokeMonster's one) are organized this way, but I suspect that very big romsets (like Tosec's Amiga) would be too big anyway (i.e. Tosec Amiga ADF games starting with A are 1807 files).

Thank you in advance

Currently there is a limit with 1000 items per directory. It's not practical to increase the limit as it will slowdown the browsing.
I suggest to split the files to a smaller directories if your collection is huge.

Just to be sure I connected the board directly to the projector with the same results.
As you can see I’m already cooling my DE10-Nano, although I’m feeding the fan with 3.3V

Anyway, what’s the technical reason for the glitch? Some clock/syncing problem? Is it tied to board quality? Why aren't the cores affected?

I'm sorry, but I didn't understand :(
You mean that if the problem migrates from core to core it's something related to my video chain?

You mean it solws down the user experience because it must check too many pages, or it slows down the menu handling by the ARM core?
Don't you think that max files per folder could be a MiSTer.ini parameter?

Thank you

Same thing happens on my board. Could it be TV-related issue?
I'll try using different TVs and displays with my DE10-nano

You need to start studying HDL to understand the kitchen.

Mmmh... OK fair, but, in the end, can you tell me if I’m risking damaging something (in the DE10-Nano or in the video chain) or I’m just getting a bad looking main menu?

Thank you in advance

There is no risk to damage. Just visual imperfection.

Hi, I want to share that I solved this problem adding

Code: Select all

[Menu]
video_mode=0
to MiSTer.ini

I really love the core configuration override in MiSTer.ini... it's very well though out.

My current video configuration is:

Code: Select all

video_mode=8
video_info=5
vsync_adjust=1
[Menu]
video_mode=0
[ao486]
vsync_adjust=0

I'm thinking about trying forced_scandoubler=1

Looks good on my Samsung TV using config.ini setting 8 - 1920x1080@60

Perfectly working here with razor sharp pixels.
