256gb Sandisk micro sd card won't work with mister

Postby MrMiSTer » Tue Jan 14, 2020 12:26 am

I bought a 256gb Sandisk ultra A1 class 10 micro sd card for use with my new mister but it wont boot on the mister after doing the mister sd card installer on my pc, i got a old 8gb i had lying about to work fine but the 256gb just won't boot like the 8gb one even after reformatting and reinstalling the software a few times. is anybody else using 256gb or is 128gb the max for the DE-10 nano?

cheers

Well thats strange maybe its a problem with the class 10 type of mine or the speed, its 100MB a second so i dont know. Do you know what make yours is so i could try buying the exact same one. Cheers for the reply

I'm using a 256GB Sandisk u3 as well and works fine here. Have you used hwtest to verify that the memory card is in fact 256GB and not a fake and also for any errors?

Cheers for replies, no i have not used hwtest is that a program for testing sd cards? I got the sd card on ebay for £18 so it was cheap but looks to be a proper sandisk and in original packaging but maybe its a fake not sure how to test it.

That card is almost certainly fake, eBay is rife with knock-offs. Yes, H2testw will confirm if your SD card is legitimate as it writes data to the entirety of the card before verifying it back. These scumbags are selling smaller capacity, slower cards, labelling them up as 64GB+ and tampering with the controller interfaces to just write back over the beginning of the card when it goes over capacity. Unsuspecting customers don't usually realise they have a fake card until the go over the real internal capacity.

SanDisk are currently selling 200GB micro SDs direct from their official Amazon store at the moment for £20.99 if you need a replacement.

I have gotten multiple fakes on Amazon as well. Be careful. I just had to get a refund from Amazon last week on a fake.

Honestly, your best bet is to spend a little extra money and go buy one at a real store.

Also, in the interest of sharing working sdcards, I have MiSTer running on a 512GB SanDisk Extreme A2.

When buying SD cards from Amazon always double check who the actual seller is right before completing checkout. Even if it ships from Amazon it may be a third party seller. I'd only order cards both shipped and sold by Amazon.

I buy sdcards from Microcenter which I am sure are chinese cards with "Micro Center" printed on them but
I have never had any problems with them on anything I've used them on and they are a good price.
Same with their 3d printer filament.
Next time I go to the city with the Micro Center in it I am getting a 256Gb card for MiSTer since I am now using
a 128Gb card that was twice as big as needed when I got it that is now running out of space!
At the rate the number of cores are being implemented that might not last as long as the 128Gb card has.

I am using a real 512GB Sandisk on main Mister and a real 256GB (always Sandisk) on another Mister and both works perfectly..
512GB paid about 110 euro when bought it..
Almost surely your microSD is a fake one
