ModelSim closes at start

Postby swapd0 » Thu Jun 21, 2018 9:54 am

Hello

I've installed Quartus II 32 bits web edition on a windows XP virtual machine under OS X virtual box, I've compiled the mist core and all goes right, but when I launch the RTL simulator it closes without showing any message error.

I've also tried with a simple module with a few gates and I get the same result.

Anyone has the same issues?

You might get more help asking on an Altera/Intel forum as this is not MiST specific in anyway, but ...

Which version of Quartus and ModelSim are you using? Earlier versions required a license setup even for the free version. Did you try running ModelSim directly, not within Quartus?

Sorry I forgot to mention that I'm using Quartus II 13.1 web edition, the one recommended in the mist wiki page (https://github.com/mist-devel/mist-board/wiki/HowToCompileTheCore)

I've also tried to run ModelSim from the desktop, but I've the same result. I'll have a look at the license part.

Anyway I'm installing a ubuntu machine to have a try on it.

Thanks.

That will require some tweaking as well - ModelSim/Quartus 13.1 will not run on current 64bit Ubuntu.

This hint worked for me (with current 18.04 LTS as well): http://mattaw.blogspot.com/2014/05/maki ... ition.html

I'm installing into a 32bit ubuntu machine, under virtual box... I'll cross my fingers.

You'll probably need the libfreetype replacement as well.

I think I read that guide as well . . .

I used Ubuntu Desktop 17.04 even then I had to use downgraded libraries.

I documented a step by step guide for myself.

The first part is for setting up Xilinx for MEGA65 . . . you can ignore that .
Just skip to this bit . . .

"ALTERA Quartus II 13.1 - for the MIST"

http://theperilsofwizdom.blogspot.com/2017/04/fpgas.html

Hope this helps ( and is actually all there ).

Nope, I've done both steps and I get a core dump

The same here, I've uninstalled the Quartus, and installed again and I get a core dump when I start modelsim.

Thanks guys.

I've executed dependency walker on the win version and it says that msjava.dll it's missing...

Let's try to fix that.

I'm not sure that's the problem. I am running ModelSim on XP without that DLL. Not exactly the same version, but both earlier and later versions.

Anyway, let us know what happened :)

You're right, that is not the problem, with that dll installed it doesn't work.

I'm going to try with a clean windows xp and a windows 2000..., by the way I was using a windows xp with service pack 2, but with the service pack 3 I got the same result.

Easy solution.

Quartus II 13.1 was released on 13th November.

Looking here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases, you can see that the latest ubuntu version was 12.04.3, download it from here http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04.3/, install Quartus II, and ... it works!!!!!!!!!1!!!

It's strange that ModelSim looks different, more like a x window application.
