MT-32 core?

Postby Televicious » Sun Sep 24, 2017 6:22 pm

I know MiST is typically used for 8/16 bit computers, but has anyone thought of putting an MT-32 core? It would be perfect with the midi expansion board. Albeit a very expensive version of MT-32, but for the sake of preservation it would be pretty awesome.

I second that... I thought the same thing a few weeks back.

I believe MiST has everything that is required for a proper MT-32 emulation and would be great to use it on an old DOS pc...

Well I got the mt32 service manual rev.3 with block diagrams, the roms with sample data, and a full dump of the IC's. I guess I should take a look at this Altera Quat thing and see what fhat does. Be back in a year.

Really? Wow! What is the plan? I'm trying to picture the input/output chain of cabling. I suppose a monitor for the MIst to adjust MT-32 modes and settings is needed as well as a monitor to play your compatible computer and games? It will be fascinating to see how the MT-32's front push buttons are done.

A dream would be a core that could work in tandem with other cores that could make use of it but that sounds like a lack of space and then some. The reverse would be a MT-32 core that somehow has a little dos loader built in. Still, using the Mist as an MT-32 with other computers would be fantastic!

Great idea! Front panel buttons could be mapped to a joystick, if at all needed. Monitor could be optional, preferably showing the content of the display.

Running in tandem with another core? Sure, just connect another MIST via MIDI.

Great idea! The HDL can also benefit other cores on a larger FPGA.
