It's possible to re-create representations of the analog filters digitally in the FPGA but getting them accurate is another issue.

I believe that is why emulators (used) to sound sooo much clearer than their original devices because even though they were bit/cycle accurate they had no analog filtering?

Some emulators (and music replayers) have attempted to recreate the analog filtering in the original chips in software by adding FIR and other such filters to the output.

Possibly, but if they are documented, couldn't they be recreated, at least in principle?

That's a question I wonder about in the JT51 (YM2151 clone project). The original chip, like some other Yamaha chips, were always used with a given DAC (the YM3012 for the YM2151). The DAC and the analog amplifier circuit add some extra "flavour" to the sound, but it starts to enter the reign of speakers, room echo and other particular and minor effects.

The one thing I do in JT51 is to have the same limited resolution than the original chip, which relayed on the DAC to linearize the output.

With the initial port of the fpgagen to the MIST there's now definitely the need for a decent sound implementation for it.

This looks like the perfect moment to get a lot of happy users for such a chip as everything even if only partly correct is better than the current silence and will thus make many, many people enthusiastic.
