Mist FPGA video tutorials / reviews

Postby philscomputerlab » Sun Nov 22, 2015 2:09 am

Hello everyone!

I've recently made some videos about the Mist FPGA computer. At the moment there are 3 videos, but I want to do a lot more :)

This video explains what a FPGA computer is and how it differs from emulation: https://youtu.be/CVq_jzj_u8U

This video is a first time setup guide using the C64 core: https://youtu.be/-j5NgsOtkAM

And here a side-by-side comparison of Desert Dream demo, comparing the Mist FPGA computer with a real Amiga and an Emulator: https://youtu.be/_SJV3K6ymSg

Thanks! Great videos!

btw why MiST is faster in Desert Dream than original Amiga or emulator (even emulator and A500 are not perfectly in sync...)?
and MiST have far best audio :)

The Mist core simply runs too fast. In a way the 3D animations are ahead of the script. So you can see the melon flying past the pyramid before the screen goes white and the rockets exploding too late.

The sound does sound good, but L and R channels are swapped, which is very odd. It also sounds much brighter.

With the emulator, I noticed I had the floppy speed set to 800% in FS-UAE, so that could be the reason. But still, the time is much closer to the real Amiga compared to Mist.

I also like that you left menu from MiST in video, it just very nicely describe difference between real thing and MiST or emulator... ;)

Hm, what core and settings did you use on the MIST? And what do you use to grab output? :)

nice videos.

It would also worth making a comparison between Shadow of the Beast on WinUAE and on the MiST, during the loading screen just before playing, there is a scroll text, it's smooth on the MiST and quite jaggy on WinUAE.

Latest C64 core and firmware. The C64 core doesn't really have settings, it was set to PAL though. I capture with a VGA capture device.

Not smooth scrolling in UAE is usually a configuration issue. I might make a video on setting it up for smooth scrolling :)
