MiST w/ MIDI and ST core: MIDI Sequencers

Postby Alessio » Sat May 02, 2015 3:27 pm

Being very interested in the MIDI side of things, I got myself MiST with the MIDI interface add-on. It's amazing to have a mini-computer with built-in MIDI interfaces.

After trying several versions of the Steinberg Cubase sequencer on the Atari ST core with varied results, I'm sharing this info in case someone is trying to get started quickly. Tested with Firmware 150410 r1006, cores r121 and r1044, TOS 1.04/DE and 2.06/DE. I'll be updating this post whenever there is something worthwile to report. For now:

  • To me, the most stable Cubase versions seem to be Cubase Lite and 3.01 (SCC/irata 3-disk version). I'll start working with this more extensively and report back if there are any issues.
  • Cubase 2.0, which worked great on my real ST back in the days and is also often mentioned as the most reliable one, is buggy on MiST in all incarnations I found (MCA 2-disk versions: 2x "Mike Hunter" and 1x without name). This goes from innocuous but annoying MROS error pop-ups (TOS 1.04) to bombs and complete system freezes (TOS 2.06).

Tips and feedback welcome!

Edit: Actually a better overview of many different sequencers was posted by knabo, I had missed this one: http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=101&t=25896&start=25#p270749
