CosmoEx videos : HD errors [SOLVED]

Postby pixelk » Sun Nov 27, 2016 1:19 pm

CosmoEx Config tool

I have a lot of CRC errors when I run the HD test ( but the exact same SDCard runs perfectly in an UltraSatan, on the same 1040 STe. I will capture the hd test and put it online later.
I also have CosmoEx lost connections too often for my taste.

HD Test

Sh¡t happening ...

Writing floppy

Reading floppy

Second HD test

Sh¡t still happening

Don't get me wrong here, I think CosmoEx is still a GREAT device, but I can't use its full potential yet.
Jookie, any idea ?

I've read here and there that sub-par power could explain those problems, but I didn't found the diagnostic or fix to that problem (maybe I didn't search thoroughly).

I read more of the forum, and it looks like the ST power supply could be underpowered to run the Pi3 + CosmoEx + USB mouse + USB gamepad + USB key

Problems solved :
- I replaced the Pi 3 by a Pi2 ( to draw less current, and I don't need the Wifi )
- Restored the image I made from the µSD when I got it, for a fersh start
- I did the "offline config" of the CosmoEx by powering the Pi directly, while the ST was off (I did it powered by the ST the first time, I doubt it changed anything, but well...)

I tried with and without an external power source, but I'm glad that with the Pi2 and fersh Image, there is no need for additional power.

My TSTHD thoughput bumped to 1,1Mo/s, no more CRC error or timeout

GREAT SUCESS :D

pixelk, great that you solved this before I managed to even respond :) and also sorry for not responding (soon enough) - I don't get much to computer during the weekend (wife, kids), I tend to respond better during working days when I'm at work and at computer...

One of the things I would recommend wold be that other USB power supply, other USB cable (it solved the issues many times now without replacing the USB power supply), then reflashing the firmware chips if the first didn't help. You managed to find this out and do it your self, congrats :)

It's bad to see that the new RPi 3 is now so power hungry, while the RPi 1 and RPi 2 are hard to get new (they are obsolete now). I was trying to avoid transition to Raspbian and to newer RPi 2 and RPI 3 as long as I could, but now I had to - you just can't buy a couple of new RPi 1, plus many people wanted RPi 2 or RPi 3 because it's new, fast, and so on, even if it doesn't offer any benefit now in CE yet (the mp3 playback runs on RPi 1, and there's no video playback yet, but one day there might be :) ).

A final post to show what a good CE_TSTHD looks like.

EDIT Thank you for your reply Jookie, and thank you for this GREAT piece of engineering :) (and thanks to all the contributors by the way).
I happen to have a few RPi1 and 2 laying around (don't ask  ), so this test was easy for me. I'm glad I bought the CosmoEx without a Pi (yes yes, I also had Pi3 to spare...)

I had the same problems with my Cosmos Ex too with Pi3, I am happy to inform you that Jookie has solved the problems with the Pi3. I also replaced the Pi3 with a Pi2, but I applied Jookies fix and put my Pi3 back in and that has been working flawlessly now :D. So, I'll stick with the Pi3 in this machine. As I have spare Pi2 now, I ordered another Cosmos Ex device for one of the STfm's.
