What kind of fun are you having with your SuperVidel?

Postby JoeAtari » Sun Oct 26, 2014 11:22 pm

I now have my SuperVidel installed and working great with some huge help from the Nature guys and users of this Forum. What are the cool things that you are accomplishing with your SuperVidel? The dual display is super cool, and I love being able to surf with NetSurf now. I've enjoyed some nice demos from DHS site. Of course, the high resolutions give me tons of screen real estate, and I'm enjoying using a couple of large LED monitors. Anything super cool that I should try? Any specific games, demos or other software that should not be missed?

My hardware is Falcon030 with original CT60, SuperVidel, Ethernat. I opted for an 85 MHz ocillator instead of the CTCM when I installed the SuperVidel, since that was the safest reliable running speed for my 68060.

I'm just using it without even thinking it's in there.

It makes for some comfortable coding sessions. Code editor on one screen, reference material on the the other.

I'm not entirely sure a screen resolution of 3840x1200 makes sense on this platform, though :)

Is that some sort of DOS BOX clone?

It's a rudimentary PC (~286) emulator.

Not much to say yet; it emulates an ~286 (no protected mode, 16-bit stuff only), all CGA/TGA modes, mono EGA/VGA and 256 color MCGA/VGA, and some SVGA modes (640x480 in 256 colors, for example). Beeper isn't emulated, but there's rudimentary Tandy/PCJr sound emulation. Emulation is mostly on the BIOS level, which means fancy Mode X stuff won't work. Planar EGA/VGA modes aren't displayed properly, since I don't emulate the VGA planar mechanism. Might do so in the future, but not at this point.

I have no idea about speed, but it seems to run Monkey Island VGA faster than ScummVM on the same hardware. Deluxe Paint runs great. PC GEM seems to work (at least one version), but so far I haven't been able to install Windows 3 on it. I'm still debugging the CPU core though, it's probably very buggy.

Great stuff!

I'm assuming 68060 required then?

On the video, it's running on a 66Mhz 68060 sans bus acceleration. It runs on less, but obviously it needs more than a stock machine to run games etc.

Yes, it should work on the CT2 as well, but I don't know what the performance will be like. The lack of a chunky 8bpp mode will also slow things down considerably, but in addition to C2P those modes could be faked using a half-width hicolor mode (wrong colors and looks weird, but easier on the CPU).

Not ready for a release yet, but working on it.

Hmm, impressive stuff!

When I was watching the video, one quick question, real or emulated floppy drives there?

Right now only disk images are supported, but I could easily support "real" floppies too. Probably won't emulate it on the hardware level though, doubt there's a need for that.

Fair enough. It was just for a moment, I thought you had gone really really *oldschool* with the emulation there.
