software recommendation for Demo animation?

Postby Neild323 » Wed May 31, 2017 4:30 pm

Hey peeps!
Just seeing if anyone could recommend some software for animation? Particularly to achieve fast scolling backgrounds &/or text u often see in demos.
(I'm not an Atari programmer btw, just looking for a point in the right direction for this)

I've been making Atari ST inspired animation for some live visuals I plan to become part of a chiptune/experimental/bassy performance.
I've been so fond of the Atari ST Demoscene after discovering more about it over the last year or 2 & want to do something using similar techniques I've seen.

I'm particularly interested in how I'd go about making some fast scrolling backgrounds & shapes like u get in classic demos with scrolling text.
I'd be starting from scratch & self teaching (& I'm sure there'd be much to learn), so it'd be great if anyone knows of the most basic software I could achieve this with?

Hopefully if theres a good PRG for this which could run on steem, just coz I'd have no way of ripping it from my Atari at present, but I'd be also open to running something on my Atari ST 1040, ready for when I source the best capture device.

Any ideas?

Im not sure if I get you right. But if you want to start from scratch, start learning ASM is a good thing to go with. As software to help you with, I would recommend DHS Falcon demosystem v15 by Evil / DHS for starters (http://dhs.nu/files.php?t=democreation) together with the ASM tutorials found on atari wiki.

If Im not getting you right, getting some paint deluxe program with color cycling animation is perhaps more what you're looking for.

I think what this chap is after is some sort of "demo maker" program. There have been at least 3 of these available in the early '90's, but I can't remember what they were called. "demo construction kit" perhaps? I'm sure either The Dynamic Duo or The Pixel Twins made one of these demo makers. If memory serves me correct LAPD had this availavle on one of their disks.

Sorry I can't offer further help, but the above should give you something to research. :-)

Peace...

You could take a look at Douglas' AGT:

It's discussed here:

Hey thanks for all the pointers on this people, its really helpful.

I've just got started looking into 'demo construction kit', found here: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=13382.
Hopefully it'll be a good start to get my head around how it all works & take things from there. I'll also take a good look at Douglas AGT, DHS Falcon & ASM in course, thanks for those links too.
Depending on how involved I get with it, I'd like to get fully stuck in & make some quality demos as seperate productions, but for now it'd be great to make some material for my visuals. I can see yet another time consuming hobby forming for myself here! haha, cheers
