What's your favorite demo on Atari ST/STE?

It's so hard to make a choice!

Please vote anyway

Myself, I went for "Dark Side of The Spoon" since I remember it as such an outstanding demo, this might however be the result of not being able to look at it for years

I' ve heard a lot about DSOTS, but I' ve never seen it... too bad, it seems to have some of the best chipset music ever heard on the ST ! Hope there will be soon some patch to run it on Steem...

Dark Side of the Spoon

Postby MoodST » Thu May 02, 2002 11:46 am

It is not that easy to choose between these demos,

As they have been realised at various time, the technology and graphism technics have improved between the cuddlys and the Just buggin' for exemple.

I have finally decided to vote for the incredible Dark Side of the Spoon, and I'm really looking forward to watching it on Steem some days...

Cheers,

MoodST

Great people like DSOTS

Postby Gunstick » Wed May 22, 2002 5:10 pm

Hi everyone,

great that people like the good old demos. For the DSOTS fans out there have a look at the web conversion at http://ulm.atari.org/
it's not exactly the real thing but it's from ULM.

Oh, and if anyone has the modfile of the reset demo... I lost it!

Hello Gunstick !

Postby Zorro 2 » Thu May 23, 2002 8:35 am

Great pleasure to see you in this forum. :o

I didn't see your web site since last year and now the megademo was finished (all in javascript !). Very good job and I enjoy to "surf" on the menu with the original songs.

To help the "community" Atari to see this wonderfull megademo on emulator, you can give some sources or mainly code of boot sector protection of STEEM's author. This emulator emulate good "overscaning" now. I you want of course !

If I must vote for the best part, lost boys will win with their last demo on this GREAT megademo :

You can hear a piece of this funny song on my web site...

By the past, I was very surprised of the protection level. The Ultimate Ripper (who are going later Dark Side !) doesn't like so much this megademo.

Gunstick, have you newsies about old members ? Always in Luxembourg ?

ps : Hey Brume, look the picture of the magic ball on this site...

DSOTS protection

Postby Gunstick » Thu May 23, 2002 8:27 pm

I have no idea how the protection works. It was given to us by
Delta Force and I did not put it on the disk. As well I don't have anymore the tools and sources used to construct the original demo disk.
What I want to do is apply that crack to remove the protection and give the mainmenu sources to the emulator programmers. So at the end we yould have a working demo on the emulators which I would release officially.

Here is the mainmenu source and standalone PRG , try to make it work :-) http://www.cpu.lu/ulm/mainmenu/

Thank You !

Postby Zorro 2 » Tue May 28, 2002 9:01 am

Thank you mister Gunstick to give sources of the main menu
I hope that use 'seriously' by the differents authors of emulators.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work on STEEM with Tos 1.2.

I'm waiting for the next emulator release to see.

Illegal Exception/SOTE

My favourite demos...

Postby Illegal Exception/SOTE » Fri Jun 07, 2002 11:20 pm

...in no particular order:

Cuddly Demos
DSOTS
Union Demo
European Demos (especially Ziggys 3D-screen which was excellent for the time being)
Oh Crikey
...and the Inner Circle demo that I don't remember the name of. ;)

Oh yes, and Punish Your Machine as it features a very lame screen by us of course! ;)

Take care!

Demo Poll

Postby PaulB » Sat Jun 15, 2002 2:13 pm

I voted for the Dark Side Of The Spoon demo. Basically because at the time, it was ahead of it's time. If you know what I mean!

Gunstick

what about best screens, not demos?

Postby Gunstick » Mon Jun 17, 2002 9:31 pm

So what are the best screens out there, be it a screen out of a megademo or just a good intro, or even bootsector.
Of course what is 'best'? The nicest? The style? The technical challenge? The concept?
I remember TCB3 in the union demo. And the overscan 3D of Ziggy which
you only realize at a second look that's a fullscreen.
And a not so well known ULM screen
which is still not working on emulators so I won't mention it.

I remember !?!

Postby Zorro 2 » Mon Jun 17, 2002 10:21 pm

Sorry to disappoint you Gunstick, my first demo I see on my first Atari ST is ULM with DSOTS in a very very distant past... for me !

Quartet leading songs on demos, and it's the first time I listen GOOD VIBRATION with "HOUSE" MUSIC mods.

With Inner Circle (Decade Demo) and Delta Force (Syntax Terror Demo) you were the best demos of year 1990.

Twelve years already. All this doesn't make look us younger...

Gunstick

before DSOTS...

Postby Gunstick » Tue Jun 18, 2002 10:40 pm

Well, before doing the DSOTS one has to first get the idea to do something crazy like that.
initially, the DSOTS 'only' uses lots of techniques discovered and created by other people before.
Just that several effects are pushed to the limit and combined with others.
I once saw paolo simoe's fullscreens demo. More fulls than in DSOTS, but somehow it was just fullscreens looking like intros.
Isn't the goal of a fullscreen to also move all that grafix displayed? You may notice that in all the screen there is not one pixel staying in place, except the black ones and some line rasters.

Sidenote on the unlimited sprites screen. It's based on a preview of a TCB (!) screen everyone was talking about. We had to laugh when we saw it. Just screen cycling and 1 sprite! If that's good, well we can do that! Added of course some overscan.

This POLL sucks

Postby Dbug » Tue Jan 28, 2003 8:46 pm

what if my prefered demo was the "NoCooper" by 1984, the "Bird Mad Girl Show", or the "Phaleon Demo" ?

fixed list of choices have absolutely no value, it's like asking "what is your favorite car, and let the choice between Porsche and Ferrari".

hi DBug,

This is a simple poll, we have no other choice to do a complete poll under another form here. It's just done for fun, but if you have a better solution, feel free ;)

cheers,

Brume.

Oh Crickey was somewhat the best for me. The menu, the screens, the music, everything was fine. By far the no1!
