Re: Outline 2008 announcement

*BOING* As some of you may know the previous installments of the Outline party featured a few performances and DJ's. We're carrying forth the tradition and we upgraded it too: If the weather allows it, we're going to have a live stage outdoors! :) For this year we can already confirm the following a...

Re: Just starting out - problems with screen buffers

watch out for andi.l .. won't work on address registers. load into data registers first before copying back. lea and move.l # don't differ much. you only need to load a screen address a few times per animation frame.. you got 160.000 cycles per VBL. i'd guess the lea is slower in this case, but i'm ...

Re: Ma gallerie ! ex Imperator/Megabusters

hi imperator. nice gallery! i think i saw your graphics in Yepya by Toons. indeed. gfx programs on falcon sucked. i couldn't get used to truepaint or prismpaint at all. you had to wait until there was Apex.. which was as late as 1995 IIRC. some guys also enjoyed working with Escape paint (1996 or so).

sh3: format it with HDDriver (i use 8.21) with dos/windows compatibility flag on. you can't boot of it anymore, but it does the trick for atari<->pc transfers.

Re: audio decompression in realtime?

MrNi: LZ coding is as good as useless on more-or-less noisy data. Huffman or another entropy coder do help. I tried a pure Huffman codec and zip and the differences were (logically) negligible.

Re: audio decompression in realtime?

zamuel: you're doing lossless compression. lossy crunches much harder with the risk of making it sound like poo. it all depends on the predictor and amount of quantisation. google for ADPCM. predictor = guess for the next sample. often this is just taking the current sample. but there are loads of s...

this is how i did it in the invitation intro for Outline2006. it uses 320x240 mode on falcon with ST palette. on the ST the lower border is removed. cmpi.w #rgb50,monitormode beq.s .rgb ; 320x240 vga60 MOVE.L #$041903F3,$FFFF82A2.W MOVE.L #$003F003F,$FFFF82A6.W MOVE.L #$04150415,$FFFF82AA.W bra.s .e...

Re: Howto set ST-LOW on Falcon?

also, and this shouldn't be neglected: poke to the videl registers synchronised with the VBL! otherwise in 1 or 2 bitplane mode, some parts of the screen may be invisible! this can be damn annoying when going back to the desktop. resolution switching and palette changing in vbl also keeps the screen...

Re: JUST PURCHASED A FALCON, HARD DRIVE WILL NOT BOOT

holding down control while booting skips the auto programs and accesories and thus forces a clean boot. this should let you disable the mischievous auto program or accesory. what i do nowadays to transfer between falcon and pc is use an IDE Compact Flash adapter and a card reader on PC. I use HDDriv...

maybe someone can help me with this: i recently removed the shielding from one of my falcons. a standard one. and now the volume on the rgb monitor is very low. also, the headphone port seems mute. i tried to up the volume with the fsound.cpx but that didn't help. maybe someone has experienced this ...

Re: Howto set ST-LOW on Falcon?

you need to do two things: 1) set the videl to 320x200, 4 bitplane. this is different for RGB and VGA 2) use the shiftmode register as Ra suggests. i don't know in what order exactly. the easiest way to find out is taking your falcon to ST-Low in TOS and using screenspain to figure out the code you ...

Re: TT vs Falcon

falcon has the same 68030 CPU as the TT but at half speed and only 16 bit access on the bus. however, it's fully 32 bit inside, including the cache and such. no FPU is mostly no problem. not many apps use it, and the 68882 is slow too. especially compared to the internal FPU of the 040/060 and intel...

Re: Why's this book so expensive?

andrew tyler's book is a good one: the resulting code is sub-optimal, but for educational purposes it's fine. he covers most stuff that was cutting edge back in those days: even pattern maps and lightsourcing.

.. but that price is ridiculous.

Re: Data packers

i have to second dio. everything except vector register programming really doesn't benefit from assembly level optimisation anymore. certainly not on out-of-order execution CPU's. on more old-fashioned or embedded type of architectures it's a whole different story (even on ARM9, for instance).
