Re: NetBSD Atari Port

I looked at Debian some years ago (woody) but the installer crashed the Milan (how naff is that?) So I took a brief look at BSD (can't remember which type). The installation put me off so I went ahead and enhanced the basic Mint installation to a full-blown Mint using EasyMint. If BSD was easier to ...

Re: Any ideas on hard disk repair?

Back in the mid-90's I was connecting a new power lead to a SCSI drive set-up so I could add a second, exchangable, drive. Due to the colour coding being reversed I managed to blow one drive. Then stupidly I didn't realise what had happened and blew the original drive too !!! I should have tri...

Re: Atari VNC

That would be excellent.

I have been using aVNC to help my Mum with Linux. She has never had a computer before so being able
to help remotely is great.

Re: Atari VNC

I've used it a few times recently to connect to Linux boxes around the country using my Milan60
I can't work out how to set the colours so that they don't appear psychedelic. I think it might be a little-endian problem.

Re: CAB 2.8

I used CAB 2.7 for years on the Milan. It was good and could use SSL although that could be troublesome so I used the non SSL stack most of the time. I did try Adamas (Draconis) and Websuite along the way but never got very far with either. Too many bugs. CAB, Adamas and Draconis are all now dead pr...

One feature we have never had on Atari is to be able to resize partitions without wiping everything.

Will this support ext2 partition types ?

Well PC-Ditto crashes the Milan and a reset is required. Strange when you consider that it does try to run under Aranym. I must try it with different colour depths but I suspect it might be the 68060.

I am using Mint 1.16.3 with XaAES and Thing.

I've got Aranym on my office PC and I managed to unpack them with
JayMSA.

I did try running the versions of PC-Ditto but they complain that the euro version of Ditto doesn't work on a USA PC, this is a British one.
It will be interesting to see if it will work on the Milan.

Thanks for that. There are 4 .st files available. I've never used these, I believe they are for emulators. Is there a simple way to unpack them back into ST files ? I did find some info on comp.sys,atari.st but they referred to some ST disc utils that probably don't work on the Milan (hacks generall...

I have never found a copy of PC Ditto I or II to test on the Milan.

Is FreeDOS just a version of DOS that can run inside emulators like SoftPC or does it run on it's own ? It's been a while since I played with this.

DosBox uses SDL so maybe Patrice Mandin is the man to ask about it.

DOS emulation

A few days ago I noticed that I still have SoftPC lurking on my Milan HD, from some tests I did in 2001 but I could never get it to work. I was wondering about some old DOS programmes. Would it be feasible to decompile a simple DOS prog and then compile the C code with GCC ? An alternative might be ...

Wouldn't a working usb port and driver solve a lot more problems ?
This would work with memory dongles and multi-card readers.

SCSI devices are quite rare now and even though I have a scsi card in the Milan I would gladly swap it for a usb card.

I currently use 1152x768 though I am not sure where this ratio came from because it's not even 4:3 it's 15:10 which isn't very far from wide screen proportions. That is unusual, 1152 wide is usually 864 high. In that past I have used PowerStrip to create custom screen resolutions under Windows and ...

I did a brief experiment of adding 1440x900 to the ATI driver config but it didn't show up in the list of available resolutions when I rebooted. I don't know why this happened. I will do some more tests and report back.

I think it goes as far as 1600x1200 in 64k colours if not 16M colours

I currently use 1152x768 though I am not sure where this ratio came from because it's not even 4:3 it's 15:10 which isn't very far from wide screen proportions. Widescreen 1440x900 is 16:10

Whatever it says at boot disappears too quickly
to read.

I found pci_info by Jean-Marc Stocklausen and
that says ATI Rage PRo.

It would be helpful if the boot stuff was logged in
some way.

I'll check next time I boot. I can't think of a way to check otherwise.

The 19" widescreens I took a quick look at have
resolutions like 1440x900 which is 16:10
I don't know if the ATI does 16:10 resolutions.

Has anyone tried a widescreen LCD on the Milan wiht ATI ?

A lot of new monitors are widescreen and I wonder if the ATI can do the resolutions.

I am in the process of building one for my parents, it will have Ubunbu Linux on it. We have Ubuntu on a project at work. The boards are a couple of years old and are only 600-700MHz. Ubuntu is ok but a little slow. It should be ok on the 1.5GHz Jetway I have ordered. I might build one for myself to...

I have the vector font version of TW installed on my Milan. However I haven't tried to use if for years. I only installed it out of curiosity, I used to use it on the STfm. I don't have access to my ST these days (no space but that will change soon) so it would be nice to get one of these and network it to my Milan. It would be good to be able to download photos from my camera and then drag them onto the Milan. More interesting projects ! you have got us all excited now.

I am fairly sure mine has a SB16 ISA
card.

The SCSI driver has to be added to the TOS PROM
and was commercial originally but was later released
without a key by the author (Micheal
Schwingen ?)
