Re: We redesign the STE

Dude. RiscOS is dead as a dodo. I'm sorry, if you think RiscOS is a healthy software ecosystem you're deluded. The ST and Amiga scene is way more vibrant. You need to face reality. It may be fun as a retro platform but it is not commercial. Oh yes, more vibrant, I will not say 'no'. It is why I enj...

Re: We redesign the STE

Well you can't buy an Acorn Archimedes these days either. It's dead as a dodo. Switching to an archimedes would not have been a sane choice. It had zero future. Again you are missing the point : there has been new hardware, ARM based, able to run RISC OS and the Archimedes and RISC PC software, app...

Re: We redesign the STE

The arch was doomed from the get go. It was not popular outside schools in the UK. I only knew one other archimedes user. I have a 5k and a risc PC but they don't mean as much to me as the Amiga or STe. I prefer the STe / TT and Falcon to the archimedes. I'd prefer smashing my head off a brick wall...

Re: We redesign the STE

I'll add that's all very nice to want ultra cheap machines : no wonder the company then has no money to spend on R&D. I bet when selling a computer, Acorn made more than 3 times the margin Atari had on theirs. Same for Apple (here I think it is even more). This might explain that. You can't have...

Re: We redesign the STE

The archimedes was simply too expensive in 1990. My first STe was 259 GBP in 1990. How much was an arch back then? 1100? GBP599 ex VAT for the BBCA3000 and you could find it at GBP549 ex VAT. http://chrisacorns.computinghistory.org.uk/docs/Acorn/Brochures/Acorn_APP87_RetailPriceListApr90.pdf And wi...

Re: We redesign the STE

I am surprised nobody (or only a few people) refer to the Acorn machines in this thread. After all they are what everybody was looking for : - Powerful CPU - Efficient usage of memory bandwith (Please name a processor which can access 32 bits in 1 cycle (ok : after the 1st access to 32 bits taking 4...

Re: Additional OPL2 sound through parallel port ?

Wrong, wrong ... If I do alone some project, then it is complete different case than here, where is asked for contribution of others. And asked for opinion. I gave mine, and then some silly talk started by Joska in first place. Do this, but don't expect that everyone will be excited and especially ...

Re: Additional OPL2 sound through parallel port ?

I've checked the schematics again - wiring Busy to Init (IOW) seems to be the only thing we need - you don't need to read from the OPL2 - so this way we could use the parallel port OPL2! Already ordered the OPL2LPT - I'm excited to see how it compares to my C64 SFX Sound Expander (modified to OPL2)...

Re: Additional OPL2 sound through parallel port ?

Sorry, that 'expert' was not for you, but OP. If it is about the parallel port not being bi directional, this sound add on, to me, should receive infos, not send some to the Atari. Now what a fuss and strange behaviour. The kit costs 35€. It is certainly worth studying it. Yes it could be used in a...

Re: Additional OPL2 sound through parallel port ?

I posted in Atari music, thinking for people who like specific sonorities, they might find it interesting. Of course yes it will need some work, for example to integrate in a soundtracker. I think there must be some sources of soundtrackers (in C) on the PC using this chip, so adding that to an ST s...

Re: Additional OPL2 sound through parallel port ?

The problem isn't the driver (although there can be an issue with PC vs. Atari parallel port compatibility). The real problem is usage -- even for the target audience (PC/DOS users) there's been only a handful of games patched. For Atari you would need to literally *create* support for that sound c...

Re: Bad Apple by Fenarinarsa (Atari STe demo) !!!!!

ok 4 colours for the MD version, I didn't notice that watching the video. Still that encodes a quarter of the infos of what I think the STE would have to encode, if it displays, as I believe, 16 colours (without further checking each picture to count the colours displayed, I'd say there are up to 16...

Re: Bad Apple by Fenarinarsa (Atari STe demo) !!!!!

first of all, this is not a demo, this is a video codec, and a poor one considering the huge file of more than 50Mbytes for example, the same animation was ported on Megadrive which also have a 68k @8mhz and it fits into 8Mbytes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vPe452cegU the real challenge here wo...

Gamopat has a few annoying Amiga trolls, especially dlfrsilver who never wastes an opportunity to throw tons of sh*t at the ST. Just ignore them. Yes, that's the facts unfortunately. Steven, sorry if you gave the details before and shame on me I haven't read them, but I am curious to know what is your background, in terms of computer science, for being so, well, excellent at what you do ? I am, for sure, very impressed. The ST people, honestly, you have always impressed me by ho...
