Re: Favourite Games!

That's not so much because of the 3D, every one of them was truly awesome games that recived top scores in just about every review. I would have add another 3D game at the 11th place, Simulcra and another 3D game at the 12th place, F16 Falcon. But you're right, i enjoyed 3D games very much back then...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

dlfrsilver

Amiga couldn't display anything that matched the clear, crisp and rock steady display of an Atari SM 124. Not even MAC could. Not even PC. Besides that, the colour monitors in that time was nothing compared to a good monochrome screen, and Atari had the best.

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

One of the reasons for the success of the Atari ST in the MIDI market was its clear, high-resolution display . While Macs were too expensive, and PCs had a shoddy green text on black display, Atari users were enjoying high-quality, monochrome graphics with all their benefits. http://www.soundonsoun...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

there were some >70Hz video modes on ECS Amigas: http://amiga.lychesis.net/knowledge/ScreenModes.html but they are Euro72: 640×400 @ 72Hz (up to 4 colors64 color palette) - only this could be comparable to ST high-res mode. Are we still talking scanlines? If so, it's not even close to SM 124. I rea...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

We're talking Amiga 500, right? Else you have to compare to Falcon. ST was THE midi computer for it's time, in fact Atari ST was so good that not even todays computers can match it's performance. ST was tight down to one millisecond. No of todays MAC or PC would even touch that. http://www.synthtopi...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

Computer wars can be fun even if it's hard to compare such different machines, but when people compare the same thing over and over again because it's the only thing that could be compared, it's unfair. This is a fair comparison between two completly different computers created for different things....

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

Okey, Amiga CD32 was a repacked Amiga 1200, but even worse was all the showelware, repacked A500 and A1200 games over and over again. Commodore would have needed something new for a change. CD32 was a looong way from true 32 bit gaming, most games felt like standard 16 bit gaming and while Commodore...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

I have used both machines over many years and I can honestly say I still can't pick a favourite, though when pushed, I would say I find the ST a lot more fun. It is the little things that I find more charming with the ST. I think the case for example, is much nicer than the Amiga 500 and seems much...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

I don't think that Atari ST is really misunderstood . It's just that we now see lot of silly comparisons, YouTube videos showing how Amiga is better. Of course, that new generations have no clue about details, and I don't think that most even cares at all. In fact, many of the people who compare th...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

When I got an ST, only the Amiga 1000 was around. I (well, my family; I was a kid back then) simply could not afford it. And for a much lower price, I got a second disk drive, and the monochrome monitor. I never cared much about graphics and sound; the games I loved didn't really need all the bells...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

To be honest, I don't get why people are still obsessed with the Amiga v Atari ST topic, it's done already, but each to their own of course. It was not a thread about ST vs Amiga. :) It was a thread about that most people seems to have missunderstand what Atari ST is. Then they compare the computer...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

I think the ST was a hell of a lot cheaper than the Amiga or the Mac. My ST was 269 pounds. The a500 was 399. Even in 1990 the ST was fantastic value for money. We won't see another machine like the Amiga, ST/Falcon/STe or Archimedes any more. :( "Power without the price" Jack Tramiel was...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

I think that's because ST got a head start. It was cheeper and faster to just port the games then to develop them especially to use Amigas hardware. Else you would have seen very few games released on Amiga in the 80's and plenty of "ST only" titles. There's already a big list of games tha...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

I would say like this. Compare games, compare colurs, sprites, just name it, but don't forget to compare the serious side as well if you want to do a fair comparison between Atari ST and Amiga. Amiga won't even get close to the sheer quality of the SM-124 monochrome screen. A pin sharp rock steady d...

Re: What could Atari have done better with the ST?

When i first got my SM 124 in the 80's it was like looking at a paper, rock steady and pin sharp. And the picture in it looked better than on Macs at school. Monitor was larger and had higher refresh rate. Vconsole under MiNT made my STfm pretty decent Unix terminal later in its life when I started...

That's correct.

But it says a lot of how similar ST was to MAC at that time.

Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

I have been Atari ST owner for many years, i have owned Amiga too. Many people seems to have missunderstand what Atari ST was about. I have seen so many clips on YouTube, sites or threads in forums where people compare Amiga to Atari ST. Then they say, look, Amiga has better graphics, Amiga has bett...

Re: What could Atari have done better with the ST?

Those are "mono compatible" games, not mono-only games. I maintain that for most users a colour monitor was enough. In the whole library of ST software there wasn't much that required monochrome, and the real professional software that did was for people who could easily afford a monochro...

Re: What could Atari have done better with the ST?

There was hardly any (was there any?!) software that required hi-res. "Mono emulator" was widley used and just about every PD library had one of those emulators that let you run hi res appz on a colour screen. The result was anything but good when the screen became a mess and you got a sl...

Re: Limits

Agree. Some games even scroll so smooth like ST had hardware scroll, Anarchy manage to do that for exemple. But, it's the limitations and because it's Atari ST that make gaming on ST so enjoyable. To see what anyone can achieve using just 16 on screen colours, software sprites and 1MB of ram. To see...

The most entertaining thing about all 8 and 16 bit computers (besides good ol' games and memories) is...limits. Let's compare the C64 version of this game to the ZX Spectrum and Atari ST versions. Let's go to the test...Midnight Resistance Let's see... C64 - very limited and odd palette where dark b...
