Re: Genesis / Megadrive core ported to MiST

Device EP3C25E144C7 i think it's better to change to C8 part in project settings to help Quartus measure timings more correct. MiST uses C8 grade of FPGA. Well spotted! Yes, it is essential. Otherwise you might get a compile build and a timing analysis that targets a faster speed grade and might fa...

Re: Question about Atari TOS memory management

Is it plausible to think that we could replace the MMU with an upgraded version that addresses all 16MB? Something built in a FPGA for example? It is certainly possible. Upgrading MMU alone is not enough. You would need to re implement some of the GLUE chip select logic as well. But sounds like an ...

Re: Question about Atari TOS memory management

None of these factors are actually relevant. In TOS you simply call Malloc, and if there's free memory - regardless of how much and what type of RAM you got - you are allocated RAM that can be directly accessed without any of the DOS hocus-pocus (XMM or bankswitching). The only thing you need to be...

Re: Question about Atari TOS memory management

Besides the 16MB barrier, there is also the 4MB one. While it is not that difficult to add more than 4MB, there is no easy way to make it behave like normal memory for screen and DMA purposes.

Re: Looking for a Black Lamp Download

Sorry I haven't responded on this in a while, but I am using stEem to try and run blacklamp but it says I need a TOS file and none of the files you guys gave me have TOS files in them. TOS files are an image of the builtin operating system that the computer had in ROM. You need at least one TOS ima...

Re: Bomb Jack Arcade : Has someone tried to port this to the MiST ?

But it doesn't mean Bomb Jack cannot be done on MiST, right? It's just that particular implementation which has issues on MiST Very difficult to tell without more details. But I can certainly conceive a similar hardware that won't fit on the MIST. If you have many subsystems each one accessing its ...

Re: Jupiter Ace arrives at MiST

More coders is always good. But in this case, may be coders taking a more professional approach is probably more important. Seems that most cores were developed by very talented software coders that learned FPGA coding very fast. But hardware is not software, it is not just an issue of a different l...

Ah, ok, i was misled by the fact that in this case you are using only 67%. So it means the sound system takes quite a lot, I guess.

Re: Genesis / Megadrive core ported to MiST

The design is made using a counter on a main 54MHz clock. With that counter there are other signals generated that are sometimes used as clocks directly (which is not a recommended practice) or have a clock enable signal (which is not great either). Again, the two approaches work well with small de...

Re: Genesis / Megadrive core ported to MiST

Some cores I've seen have problems with one clock being derived (one clock divided to produce a slower clock) and then having hold timing issues. You should be able to see the failing paths on the timing report. These cases are usually not too difficult to fix. Ideally remove the clock division and ...

I was wondering if you could have 2 floppy drive on the same ST ? ... can this be done via one ribbon internal cable with triple connector ? It is totally possible to have two drives. Xilinx BRAM (18 Kbit) is twice as big as MiST FPGA M9K. The problem as Newsdee is saying, might be external SRAM vs DRAM.

I didn't time it but I estimate around 2 hours. I'll do a make distclean and re-make later and check :) For fun I'll also let the Mega STE do it (both using USB flash memory as harddisk through alanh's Unicorn so it'll only be the pure CPU difference). You like to "train" your STs. :) Why...

Re: Gotek having A: and B: with same content

Something just occured to me - with the HxC you probably don't have to modify the ST/Falcon to do this. Motor on will be asserted regardless of drive, so if motor on is asserted but d0 isn't, then assume that d1 is being accessed. I have no idea if HxC does it like this but I believe this should wo...

Correct. And even then you'll need a custom firmware because, as a consequence of the hardware limitation, the firmware doesn't support multiple drives.

It would be pretty cool to have one Gotek serving both A: and B: ... so it's not possible on Atari in any floppy emulator? It is possible with the HxC floppy emulator, and possibly with the Gotek with HxC firmware. However, it needs both drive select signals to be present on the floppy bus, ... Aga...
