Re: ECG's Fake compact 004 - Zak McKracken 1 file, English version + Medway Boys Sync protection crack

Just spotted this and had a look at the code for the sync protection crack. Have to say.... very, very clever method! I hadn't thought of being able to re-sync the code with the counter again every time the trace de-crypt is called. And also re-syncing to handle the trace checksum code being modifie...

Re: Volume 2 campaign extended

Does anyone have a contact email for Rob (Vapour) ? I tried the last one I had (from 2002!) but it's no longer valid.

Would be a shame if he couldn't be included in the hackers section of the book.

Re: Looking for Rob Northen originals images

Just catching up with this thread myself... Andy, we're both talking about completely different cartridges... the one I used for hacking games I developed myself and was very simple,it only allowed me to freeze the machine and take a dump of memory, nothing more. That's the one I mean when referring...

So your cart was another one in the similar lines to the LLS cart I had a copy of? Yeah I had the LLS one as well (have got the source for that somewhere as well!), but I just stuck with my old RAM copy/reset cart. 'cause I'd been using it for years at that point and was used to MonST for hacking e...

I'm a bit confused, is that rob anything related to "rob northen" ?? No, "Rob" was also the real name of Was (not was), Vapour etc. ;) On some of the automation menus he called me a "button pusher" (for using the hacking cartridge), for taking shortcuts with hacking instead of tracing stuff by hand...

After all TOS initialization, the trace routine stop and get back in ultimate ripper memory. Very cool idea. Haha, yes, that's a great way to do it, I hadn't thought of that. :) I never saw an Ultimate ripper cart, I had my own cart *way* before any of the commercial ripper stuff appeared. Now you ...

Not exactly. The actual reading and measuring must be done at real time, so it was not traced. Yes of course, I was forgetting that... obviously some timing critcal stuff and control of h/w registers would have to be done with the trace decryption disabled. Very interesting. Just out of curiosity, ...

So If I understand well, the protection is based on the key value. The speed-sector is only a first "copy test" at the very beginning of the protection process. Yes. A cracker only have to remove the test of the speed sector to crack the protection ? In theory yes, but in reality, no. Because the w...

The sector timing part isn't used in the calculation of the "key". Basically they check the sector timing and if it matches what they're looking for (ie. the disk is not a copy) then the key is calculated from those few bytes and then passed back by the protection code to the main program. If the se...

You use the track to file code to rip the disc, so you end up with 160 files (1 for each track of a double sided disk). Then you pack them all with Pack ICE. Then you lump them all back together with the track to lump code. Finally you work out how to patch the games loading routines and then use th...

ZIPLOAD auto filer/ramdisk source

This is for converting raw data images back into files automatically. It also works as a RAM disk if sufficient memory is available. Obviously the games original disk loading routines have to be patched to work with the new loader. Zip file includes source for text intro/loader of some games it was ...

Yeah i'll upload a bunch later. There's nothing special code wise though, just a text intro + maybe some patch code for the game being loaded. If you want coding tips you'd be much better off looking at demo type stuff.

I was paid to hack quite a few games on the ST, believe it or not by Rob Northen computing! :) Around 92-93 some companies were putting out cheap compilation releases, with maybe 3-5 games which were a year or two old, in one package. So they wanted them hacked/packed onto as few discs as possible (...

Yeah, in that case it won't work with a Pasti image, so it would have to be used on a real ST. The magic number is calculated from the fist part of the sector (which is written at normal speed)... so by ending the write command mid sector (before it overwrites the different speed part) you can chang...

I like to think we kickstarted the compacted disk scene. Absolutely. I didn't get my ST until summer '88, before that I was hacking stuff on the BBC Micro (did 100's of tape to disc hacks etc.) and when I started getting the first of the LSD menus I was amazed and wanted to learn all about the ST h...

Fullscreen scroller intro source

Here's the source + graphic files from my Grandad 2 intro (fullscreen scroller).

Use it for your own releases, you can change the background graphic logos + the big scroller text by editing the pi1 files. It has to run from an AUTO folder.
