Re: SHIFTER reimplementation on FPGA

Hi Smonson, On this forum we have seen a number of STs over the years with Shifter chips that have failed. I don't know why chips like that fail over time - can semiconductor junctions fail? What causes that? Since the Shifter is a custom chip do you think an FPGA version would be available for gene...

Re: Atari ST hardware problem

A similar board is shown here: http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=28426 So this should be a 512k ST? U32, U33, U34 and U38 look as if they are a different make of memory chip from the others so maybe someone had problems with this machine in the past and replaced those chips. Is this screen ...

Re: Fast Devpac Question...

Happy birthday Peter! I remember the Bullfrog Tutorial that came with Devpac 2 on ST Format. It had at least 20 includes, incbins etc. As others have mentioned I think this is limited by available memory and not a hardcoded limit. I remember thinking if that was commercial quality code then it was v...

This is all very cool. I'll have to buy an ST to VGA cable to try this out.

Re: The SECRET VIDEO MODE in an ST: 400 lines in COLOR (and with 72 Hz)!

Amazing discovery!! So just to get this right, you need a RGB->VGA adaptor and it displays 320*200 in 2 bitplanes (4 colours?)
It would be interesting to see Oxygene's Bob demo running in that resolution. 4 colours would mean just the Bobs - not the background obviously.

Re: ZXR 0.1a (new Speccy emu)

Very nice! I'll need to try that on Hatari. A few years ago did you convert James McKay's X128 V0.5 to the Falcon? https://x128.speccy.cz/x128wip/x128wip.htm "It was shown for the first time at the Nordic Atari Show. It's a bit slow and needs a fast machine, but future versions should have much...

Re: Tempest 4000 on PC....oh dear

I think it looks good based on the YouTube video. A bit like the on rails shooter Rez on the PS2 and sharper than Tempest 2000 on the Jaguar. It might be a good justification for me to get a PS4, that and Shenmue 3. I'm not really a great fan of Jeff Minter games although Revenge of Mutant Camels wa...

Well done Targhan! Please add this to the documentation. https://github.com/skeezix/zikzak/blob/master/zik80/audio-gen/ym-file-format.txt Is this correct? To play the digidrum on channel A: bit: 7654 3210 bin: 0101 0000 =0x50 (80) To play the digidrum on channel B: bit: 7654 3210 bin: 0110 0000 =0x6...

Re: YM + digidrum won't work

Hi Targhan, I don't know if this is significant. I wrote a program to list out the YM6 attributes, just the headers at the moment. It also dumps your digidrum sample to a file. It is 8-bit unsigned and can be read by Audacity. The original specification just mentions 4-bit audio samples, but I'm sur...

Hi Targhan, Which doc are you referring to? I only have this document: http://leonard.oxg.free.fr/ymformat.html but that document doesn't mention "bit 5-4 indicates the channel where to play the digidrum". I tried the WinAmp plug and AY-Player but as you say no sound is heard. Both play th...

Re: Wavy video on 1040 STF

This may sound silly but does your STF have all the shielding in place? In particular there should be a shielding box around the video shifter. I'm not an expert on this but the American FCC at the time had some strict regulations about Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). The shielding should be the...

Re: Recapping an ST board - is it worth?

I think it is worth it to recap your power supply if you want to keep your Atari running. I had a 20 year old epoxy filled Spectrum power supply go up in smoke and was glad it didn't damage my Speccy. I don't know if Wang capacitors were that bad. The Bad Capacitors web site was, I thought, in respo...

It seems to depend on the supported modes on the video cards. I really should support in a Window mode, but I never found a way to sync with the vertical blank in DirectX without taking 100% CPU time!

Re: Reset button not working on STF

Thanks Greenious! The STF has been stored in a warm, dry room sitting on it's edge with the floppy drive facing up. I really should put it in a box with a dust cover. I might have time to open it up over the weekend and see if there's anything obvious. I'll check the L-shaped pins.

Re: Hardwarescrolling Control3.5a extension

Hi freddex73, The hardware scrolling effect looks amazing in your demo. It's smoother than the Violent Death game Colin wrote with the Missing Link (STFM - no hardware scrolling). I wasn't aware of the Hardware Scrolling Control 3.5a extension. I think it's probably best to use Thomas's playfield sy...

Reset button not working on STF

Hi,
I tested my 2.5Mb STF a few weeks ago and the reset button is not working. The spring is OK and the button returns to its normal position but it doesn't cause a reset. I haven't opened the machine recently but was wondering if anyone has seen this problem before or what the solution could be.

I'll contribute and watch the STOS forum thread on Atari-forum but I don't want to sign up or buy into Facebook at all.

Re: One last thing

I also thought about unrolling the loop. I don't know the effects of the 68030 cache or instruction timing differences between the 68000 but I did some rough calculations. At 16MHz we have 320,000 clock cycles per frame. dbra cost: 640/32=20 dbra instructions per scanline iteration 20*10=200cc when ...

Re: One last thing

Maybe you're using an old Hatari version that had a CPU bug ? No it's just shift is the fire key and sticky keys on Windows 10 was causing the problem! The last time I used Hatari was on Windows Vista. I've turned sticky keys off. On the plus side, the blitter code (especially the scrolling) is pre...

Re: One last thing

I don't have a Falcon, but I tried it on Hatari. The music is excellent and the game scrolling is very smooth. The collision detection seems a bit iffy in that I couldn't shoot anyone. Maybe I'm just too slow. Hatari emulating a 68030 Falcon, 4Mb RAM, no DSP and EmuTOS on my little N4200 laptop is v...

Devpac File Selector Bug in TOS 1.00

For development I use Steem 3.2 (or Steem SSE if I want STE features) with a hard disk mapped to my Windows drive. I like it and I can edit my files in my favourite text editor and assemble them with Devpac. I try to keep all the filenames in the standard 8.3 file name format. Today I found a bug us...

You should check out Dominic Robinson's Rainbow Processor: http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0013421 It looks like ST rasters but it's not in the borders. It shows great control of the colour palette though. There is information on how to control the border colours in the ULA book: ht...
